My wife and I are in Paso Robles visiting friends, wine tasting, and attending the Mid State Fair. Cheap Trick is playing here tonight.

We went to a winery called Eberle Vineyards this afternoon. It turns out that the Vineyard was founded by Gary Eberle, who was a defensive lineman at Penn State from 1963 through 1965. He came out to California in the ‘70’s and founded this winery, which is thriving today. I was told that he has roughly 450 acres planted with grapes, and his winery facility is really nice. It has an extensive network of caves, and beautiful gardens and views.

Gary has a photo of his PSU football jersey (No. 70) framed, along with a photo of the Blue Band spelling out his name on the field at Beaver Stadium, and a letter from Reagan thanking him for providing wine for a 1986 White House function.

He signed a bottle of Cab for me, told us how proud he was to have played for JVP, and related a story or two about Sue, the Tavern, his fraternity (DU), and State College. It was such a pleasant surprise to meet him.

IIRC from JoePa memorial service, Jimmy Cefalo talked about being in the wine business also.

Such strange coincidences. Chris Eberly is his winemaker, but unrelated to Mike the owner.

PSU had another Chris Eberly play for them in the late 1990’s.
His Sophomore and Junior year highlights are outstanding and available on YouTube. And then he got into JoePa’s doghouse.

They make a number of varietals and a few blends. Off the top of my head, we tasted a Viognier, a Sangiovese, a Syrah, a couple of Cabs, and a couple of blends. I liked the Viognier the best, followed by the reserve Cab and the Syrah. Enough so that we joined their wine club.

HA... i go to Paso 4-5 times a year. My company acquired a manufacturing software company in 2019 that was located in Paso, right next to Riboli winery. I hope you're staying at the Allegretto, only decent hotel in town. Enjoy the fair, it is the highlight of the year in Paso

A Cal fraternity brother of mine built a nice home on top of a hill in Templeton, a small town on the southern border of Paso, so we are staying with he and his wife. Had dinner at a seafood restaurant called “Catch.” It’s on the plaza in Paso. I give it two opposable thumbs up, Their Ahi Tuna was great.

Great choice… The Catch is top of my list. Outstanding calamari. The town center is very cool around Christmas as well. It’s a great little town

My fraternity brother (Paul) says you should go to Dusi Winery next time you are in Paso, and he will hook you up. Paul is a retired dentist, but works at Dusi several days each week. He loves wines and hobnobbing with winery customers.
