My wife and I are in Paso Robles visiting friends, wine tasting, and attending the Mid State Fair. Cheap Trick is playing here tonight.
We went to a winery called Eberle Vineyards this afternoon. It turns out that the Vineyard was founded by Gary Eberle, who was a defensive lineman at Penn State from 1963 through 1965. He came out to California in the ‘70’s and founded this winery, which is thriving today. I was told that he has roughly 450 acres planted with grapes, and his winery facility is really nice. It has an extensive network of caves, and beautiful gardens and views.
Gary has a photo of his PSU football jersey (No. 70) framed, along with a photo of the Blue Band spelling out his name on the field at Beaver Stadium, and a letter from Reagan thanking him for providing wine for a 1986 White House function.
He signed a bottle of Cab for me, told us how proud he was to have played for JVP, and related a story or two about Sue, the Tavern, his fraternity (DU), and State College. It was such a pleasant surprise to meet him.
