Question Regarding NFL Referees Owning Up to Mistakes

I was thinking of the play yesterday where Pickett had to leave the game when a Ravens player yanked Pickett’s face mask and slammed his head into the ground. No flag. Here’s my question: are blatant misses like this regularly addressed after the games or is it radio silence? Refs miss a good ten calls a game easy, it’s part of the game; I’m wondering if there is any kind of systematic after the fact review.

not sure this is the answer, but somebody reviews every play of every game relative to each official on the field. They get graded, they miss too many (I dont know the number) they can get suspended for a few games or fired. But you are right, this is top secret information. The NFL has an official spokeperson for the refs. If the NFL feels something needs to be said, they will make it. And yes the NLF has come out with official commentary from time to time, but not always.

The Officiating Department’s weekly evaluation process is thorough. They work with officiating supervisors to review every play from each of the seven on-field officiating positions: referee, umpire, down judge, line judge, field judge, side judge and back judge. The supervisors — former officials with decades of experience — identify successes, areas for improvement and points to emphasize.

Somewhat connected to the topic, but check out the tweet from Garrett Wilson today:

Yikes. A few players also piping up in the comments. Don't normally see this stuff aired in public. I'm sure the NFL already has his fine in the mail.

Also, Denver's Jerry Jeudy got away with blatantly bumping the ref yesterday. I'll make a note to follow up on this; he did not draw a flag for this and I can't believe he won't be fined.

I saw that also. I didn't see the whole game, just that clip, but it appeared to me he wasn't even flagged for doing so.

Being a "paid" (wink wink nudge nudge) "referine" apparently means never having to say you're sorry.

I'm pretty sure he will be fined.

In soccer, that would be a red card.

IMHO, the NFL ref screwed things up on the play. He should have instantly thrown his flag and ejected the player.

Yeah, I was unclear and edited. He did not draw a flag. Thanks.
