Born in St. Louis, signed with the Cardinals at 17, played 9 seasons in the Major Leagues with them, and spent 50 seasons announcing Cardinal games. Combined, he spent 64 years with the organization. And, he died in St. Louis
He was supposedly a better football player, but chose baseball because they were better paid than football players. He was thought to have been a candidate for the Heisman had he returned to Mizzou the next year.
