I remember during football season this past year, there was a thread (half-kidding I assume) about bringing The Kang back.

My question is this: Taking into account Croom getting you a bowl win but the offseason looking pretty rough, if you could bring Jackie back today as the head coach, would you?

Nope, I wouldn't want him back but the reasoning with Sherrill, you at least had a chance of winning. I always had a small glimmer of hope that he could turn it around even in preseason 2004. Now that Croom has proven he can have a winning record, I wouldn't want Sherrill back. And of course, it was typical message board overreacting.

Deaths of people close to him and stuff like that. He was burnt out and weary. After a break, I'd take him back if he thought he regained the fire.

say what you want, but I want the excitement we had back when Kang Jackie ruled.

like losing to Ole Miss 31-0? Hell yeah, I'd take that back in a second. And you're the one who wants an "explosive offense" and you want JWS back?

And don't give me this "his offenses were better than Croom's" copout that you are about to use. JWS was hardly a Mike Leach. All we did was run it behind six fat guys and then prayed that our athlete playing QB wouldn't get us beat. And our damn receivers couldn't catch anything even then. All we had were a bunch of midgets like Tee Milons.

Plus, I couldn't stand all the stupid personal fouls that would kill any excitement that was built up. The only time we ever hit anyone was after the whistle.

Oh, and I almost forgot about him punting to Derek Abney over and over despite the fact that the guy set NCAA records against us for returning punts back for a TD. Don't get me started on some of the crap kickers we had like John Micheal Miss a Mile and Robert Wallis.

Nothing like watching a 4-9 Bama team slaughter you at home and not being a bit surprised by it. That just screams excitement.

No way no how do I want Jackie back. I appreciate what he did for us, but he lost the fire and then lost control of the program. Eventually every coach loses it and needs to hang it up, and that time has come and gone for Jackie.

I'm nowhere near sold on Croom yet, but Sherrill is the one who drove our program into the ground to start with. And in answer to Coach34, the last thing I'd call the 2001-2003 seasons is exciting. I sure as hell don't want any of that back.

Last years winning season was an anomaly? I do, I think we will be right back to our normal records under Croom this year.
I hope I am wrong but I don't think that Sly has built the "foundation" that he has harped on so long. I see him as an obstinate, not very bright position Coach who possesses few qualities or skills as a head coach

I wouldn't want Jackie back either. I think we need to end the incestuous Ala./Miss. State trend in football coaches.

...the Jackie that is working to get the Bama job? Or the Jackie after Bama has said "no thanks."

Rehiring Sherrill would probably work out even worse than rehiring Polk did.

JWS took the best team that M-State may have ever fielded (2000) and led them to a 7-4. Every team we lost to that year had no business being within 2 TDs of us.

JWS was never able to sustain success b/c he played down to the level of his competition as much, if not more, than he played up to it.

Being the winningest AND losingest coach in our history pretty much sums it up for me.

....if memory serves, it was over after the 3rd play. 1st play, Bama lost yardage. 2nd play, Bama lost yardage. 3rd play, screen pass to "The Human Highlight Reel" Odell Bradley's side followed by Odell's demonstration of "How not to defend a screen pass", and a Bama TD.

Game over.

And the worst part was we were slaughtered by an obviously BAD team, who didn't even look very good themselves whilst slaughtering us.

That's pretty much a longevity thing more than any indication of being a good coach or not. Ron Polk holds that distinction as well. And before long Stansbury will be in that category too.

In retrospect, that season was the beginning of the end for MSU football. We just didn't realize it at the time.

Of course it's also a lot harder to build up a margin of wins in football where a game or two above .500 in a season is considered a good year - especially for MState.

2003 was horrible. the only game i saw that year was against LSU out of all games. me and my dad already left the stadium as MSU scored it's only touchdown of the night. also seeing ole miss have one of its best seasons in a long time didn't help matters much either.

There's nothing like losing to a 4-9 team by a score of 38-0.

Those last 6 games of 2003 was far worse than anything Croom has put out on the field, and that's saying something. 45-13, 42-17, 38-0, 59-21, 52-6, and 31-0 are etched permanently in my brain, no matter how much I try to forget it.

With Jackie there was always a chance to pull out the win. After 2002 I had given up hope but he didn't have that fire anymore. With Croom I expect every game to be a loss. He wasn't qualified for the job and got lucky last year. So personally I don't want either of them running the program but if I must chose one I'd take a rejuvenated Jackie Wayne over McCroomvy in a heartbeat. Then have him retire at the first sign of losing that drive to win.

had ole Jackie retired after the Snow Bowl, we probably would be playing a Wade- Sherrill stadium on Jackie Sherrill Ave.across from the Sherrill School of Media Relations Building. Ok, the last one was a joke.

when we had the good Jackie was the fact that we always had a chance. And there was always a decent chance we would whip the other team's butt. We had that swagger about us, and we were hated by everyone. Too bad it all went up in flames at the end, and that's hard for me to forget.

Although I loved last year, Croom doesn't inspire that confidence and swagger, although if he keeps winning, the rest of the conference will forget about the nice little story of Croom being the first AA coach and will start hating him and us again.
