Maroon Eagle's post about Charlotte got me really looking at the Mid-Major (aka Group of 5) conferences and how they'll shake out after this round of realignment sets up in the next 2-3 years.

By 2024, we'll have:

AACCUSAMACMWCSun Belt
ECUFIUAkronAir ForceApp St
MemphisLaTechBowling GreenBoise StArk St
USFMTSUBuffaloFresno StCoastal
SMUUTEPKent StColorado StGeorgia So
TempleWKUMiami OHNevadaGeorgia St

FAUSam HoustonEastern MichSJSUMarshall

UNTToledoWyomingUSA
RiceWestern MichHawai'iUSM
UTSATexas St

Looking at those line-ups, I would say The American is still technically the top G5 conference, but I don't think there's a lot of daylight between them and the Sun Belt, who I'd place at #2.
Conference USA is VERY clearly at the bottom and I'd put Mountain West above the MAC, so I would rank them out at:

1. AAC
2. Sun Belt
3. MWC
4. MAC
5. CUSA

I think there are times when the American, Sun Belt, and Mountain West can be interchangeable.

The MAC: all you need is a really strong team. Northern Illinois and Western Michigan proved that several years ago.

CUSA: I just don't know.
