On a related note, a December report by the USA Today revealed that the average salary for a Division I football coach topped $1 million for the first time last season. In 1999, only five coaches received $1 million or more per year.
holy crap.

several years back there would only be about 7 or 8 guys in the millions. as of today where we are midway through the year there are 55 players with over 1 million in winnings.

of a journalist, but I thought this might be a little over the top.

The Bulldogs are now competitive and command respect.
People still have the idea that we should be whipped handily because we are Mississippi State.

and it mentioned the increasing salaries in college football. I'm going to mess up the quote, but I think the basic idea is that if the average salary continued to increase exponentially at the current rate that it has in the past couple years, it would surpass our GDP about 30 years from now.

At some point you have to think that the market will level off, but I don't know what point that will be.

I know. The commanding respect seems to be over the top. It is still nice to know that a non-biased MSU journalist wrote that statement. We will learn more about our progress mid-way through this season. I am just glad that we are more competitive based on last year's results. I think each tough team we play this year will have the thought in the back of their head "Damn, this isn't a gimme anymore".</p>

the first ever million dollar coach when A&M lured him away from Pitt to be Head Coach / Athletic Director?

P.S. No way that situation could have worked out badly.

was more like $200,000 per year. After Googling it, I see now that his contract at Texas A&M was 6 years for $1.7 million or a little under $250,000 per year. I believe that was about twice what the then current highest coach's salary was.

I hope it is for more money, because that will mean he had more than 1 winning season. (Unless he retires after a very successful career.) Otherwise he will be leaving because he got fired.
