Recruiting strategy.......

We're already starting to see names like Craver to the portal. It's more important now than ever to have an actual plan about how to go about recruiting. Me personally, I think we have to double down on MS guys (both high school and JUCO), and amp up our S&C/weight-room game. Go out and hire the best, and be known as weight room warriors. One good thing I see from Lebby is that he recognizes the JUCO system. Then in the portal, you target a mix of P4 guys looking for PT, and G5/FCS guys looking to move up. I think the days of getting Alabama and Louisiana guys and developing them.....are over. They are the quickest to hit the portal, we have evidence of that.

Obviously, I also believe that we need a core, key, niche-offense that we recruit to year in, year out. Spend your limited NIL on defense and a little on QB.

I know I'll be hit with a barrage of comments about how we have to be more like Ole Miss and just spend spend spend. And I also know that we can't really carry out my plan with Salmon and Lenny here because they don't have a plan and all they know is showtime because Lenny is a genius play caller or some shlt. But it's nice to dream about I suppose.

If it’s me I’m driving the price of Caleb up every day until “signing day”. Ever since he committed to old piss they look like booty passing.

I am honestly considering transitioning from my industry to college athletics at some point in the next five years because I think these are interesting problems to solve. But I’m sure I’d suck as a 40 year old guy with no experience

I think our over reliance on JUCO recruiting this year is going to bite us in the a**. Still having nightmares from the last time we signed multiple DL from one mediocre JUCO team.

What do you sell recruits? Typically some balance of playing time, great coaching, college experience, prestige, wins…

About all State has to give is opportunity

We need guys who need football, like Leach said.

We simply are not signing the best players unless they are from MS. And even there, we need to start with defense and QB. We’ve never done well with the WRs like Cunningham and honestly WR should be the last position we worry about.

Notice how Lenny went to the WR well first, and look how much that netted us.

JUCO football is an old tried-and-mostly true model State’s used.

Unfortunately that’s partly why our football team is the Jeep Wrangler of the SEC.

It’s good in short stints but no consistency.

JUCO are back filling roster spots for depth from the roster being depleted from OL and DL in the 22 and 22 class.

The portal window opens in 6 days we should have 12-15MM for portal and roster management and retention.

It’s a supplement, just like the portal. Not a crutch. The only reason it’s an advantage for us is because there are so many within our borders.

Nowadays it’s mainly for late bloomers, rather than guys who didn’t make grades.

Oh yeah, the guys Lenny ran off. Right.

Bet he wishes he had them this past year.

Name me one just one DL that transfered out and is contributing at the next school. I can only name one OL and that guy went home to Nashville to play at Vandy. Add to that Woody is having a good year at USC but he wasn’t ran off he wanted a change.

Just because you believe one thing doesn’t make it right. I’m providing facts

Name me one he brought in that doesn’t suck. We can play games all day.

Bottom line, if you can’t do better, better keep what you got. At least then, he could legit blame the previous coach.

Your narrative sucks hard.

We’ll see if that back-filling works. You can’t be too selective if the portal management and retention doesn’t go as expected.

Don’t discount grades. They’re always an issue.

And yes, it’s a supplement but much more minor. The vaunted JUCO pipeline is drier and drier.

Jucos now a days is dry well. With the portal players just go to another program in the D1 ranks rather than get placed in juco.

We’re thinking alike with our oil references when it comes to JUCOs.

Shapen didn’t suck. He had too much confidence in himself though.

Which isn’t a bad thing but he needs to manage the game more and not do too much on his own.

Eh. No.

While Arnett sucked as a leader, he realized he needed to put his brand on the team because he was in a situation where he couldn’t blame Leach.

Since Arnett sucked, Libby had to go his own way too. Early returns aren’t promising though…

I don’t think Arnett did much on his own, Brad Peterson literally led him around on the sideline by the hand. He put his brand on things alright. What a disaster.

For sure, but it’s our only option. We don’t have enough juice to land HS kids.

Spend money to keep the guys we want and guys out of the portal. I would not spend too much on high school.

We were talking morning the context of DL.

and agree to disagree about putting your stamp on a program in year one. Sometimes it’s best to figure out what you have, then adapt. Unless you can bring about 10 loyal guys in like a Cugnetti.

Using what Arnett did isn’t a good starting point - what he did was utterly stupid.
