Former two-time American League manager of the year Buck Showalter is sidestepping questions about his interest in the Mississippi State coaching?job.</p>

Showalter, who is an ESPN analyst with 11 years experience as a major league manager, was the master of ceremonies Monday night at the presentation of the Ferriss Trophy, given to Mississippi's top college baseball?player.</p>

The former Mississippi State player would not directly answer questions about his interest in replacing retiring longtime coach Ron Polk during a brief interview before the ceremony. New athletic director Greg Byrne is expected to make a hire after the College World?Series.</p>

"I'll leave all that up to Greg," Showalter said. "He's going to beat the bushes and try to make a great decision for the university, just like the great decision they made on coach Polk a long time?ago."</p>

Polk resigned in March after 29 seasons at Mississippi State and 35 years as a head coach. He built one of the nation's best programs in Starkville, where the Bulldogs earned 21 straight postseason appearances before finishing with Polk's first losing season?Saturday.
