I don't post often, but I know "some" of the right people. In the baseball case, I have talked to the "right" person. Trust me when I say this. Greg Byrne will do a search. John Cohen is the #1 guy and will most likely be the next baseball coach at MSU. Raffo will get a look, but Polk will not name the next coach. If Cohen wants it, it is his.

so that when it does not happen my disappointment will take on a true MSU feel. it just wouldn't be right if i finally gave in to reality.

I hope you are right. Based on the names rumored, I would say Cohen is my #1 choice followed by Dan McDonnell at Louisville. I would also be interested in Steve Smith from Baylor and Rick Jones from Tulane but feel like a younger coach is the direction MSU needs to go in.

Although I think it is a long shot, MSU should see what interest Tim Corbin may have as well when Vandy comes to Starkville next weekend. I would put Corbin as my #1 choice if he is remotely interested and Cohen as my #2 choice with Dan McDonnell as my #3. Any of these coaches would be outstanding and a major upgrade when it comes to recruiting the talent needed at MSU.

Currently, our talent level is so far below where a MSU baseball team should be it is embarrassing. We have zero MLB prospects in the current weekend rotation. When is the last time you can remember MSU not having anybody the scouts are interested in drafting in its SEC Rotation? Polk just hasnt gotten it done with recruiting since his return. Sure he has had a few good players such as Easley, Rea, Moreland, Turner, Weatherford etc but just not to the level that puts us where we need to be and that is competing for national titles.

but my only worry with him is how some of our "fans" would react to someone with Ole Miss ties. It's a shame because he is a GREAT coach.

But that's a concern because MSU needs someone that will get everybody to support the baseball team. If McDonnell is the second choice, and we do indeed hire him, I would be very pleased.

I keep talking to people that are under the impression that most of this team was recruited by Raffo. Don't know where they get their information (i.e. on clue if it is reliable or folks just blowing smoke up my ***), but if that is the case, Raffo needs to be nowhere near the runnings for head coach.

was that he was the main recruiter when we were doing our recruiting pretty exclusively out of our baseball camp. Basically, after McDonnell served his *** on the recruiting trail, we hired McNickle who has at least gotten us to recruit out of state some- see Conner Powers.

So, I was under the impression that McNickle was doing most of the recruiting for the past few years, but it now appears that Raffo/McNickle were splitting it at a minimum.

Bottom line- Raffo isn't aggressive enough when it comes to recruiting.

I'ma have to back Louis up on this one... He has already stated the exact same thing and, he is generally considered a reliable source by my book...

Dang I hope your right. That would be the best news about MSU sports since Doc told LT he was out.

But, I believe you will find that UK's jugular is exposed as well -- they ain't payin' him all that much. Although, I don't believe we are paying Polk as much as some other SEC coaches are making. But, I assume our baseball revenue permits us the lattitude to be very competitive.

#1 target, but he will not take the job as long as Polk is pushing Raffo. Tommy will have to be out of the running for him to even consider it.

that there would be a national search and Raffo would be the new head coach at the end of the process.

I hope my little birdie is wrong, but he seemed confident with his supposition.

that is certainly the way it will happen. "We conducted a nationwide search. And it turned out the BEST candidate was in our own backyard."

However, just to dispute what you are saying, this will happen only if Cohen turns down the job.

same way Byrne got the job? He was in our backyard the whole time?

I pray that we truly open the search up to all ...but I'm just getting the feeling that we are bowing to Polk on this one. Disgusting if true.

then perhaps I am not interested in him due to his need for a gonad transplant.

I am calling BS on that theory. Time will prove you and me right or wrong.

But, I don't think we will bow to Polk. I don't know that we have any reason to do that.

But, just to be clear, I think we will offer Cohen the job without any damned search. So, either way, you might not get your wish for the open search.

Well, I guess we could say that we searched and found Cohen. But, that's a little far fetched if that happens, don't you think?

then I will be glad to boast about the "wide open search" that we conducted. My Fear is that we come back after the season is over with an inexperienced homer as head coach.

And all us true Bulldogs should be HAPPY! (with that choice)

to hiring Raffo after a national "search?" One has had success working in the athletic departments of Oregon, Oregon State and Kentucky and was well qualified and ready for a promotion. The other has had middling success at best at one school for his whole adult life and has shown no signs of being ready for a promotion.

because if he wasn't, LT would be making the decision, and I'm pretty sure he would go with Raffo without at least asking Cohen.</p>

hell, I think its great that we go Byrne.....really glad. I just posted that for the irony and the predictability of our hiring process.

Thank God, that Byrne was on campus to get hired....otherwise new AD Duncan McKenzie would be having a size Large #1 jersey being made for Raffo.

Cohen just signed a four year contract at $300,000 per year. Do you think Cohen would come to Starkville if State matched that?
