Bob: Are you sure about that salary number? Stanford has a ginormous endowment and all, but that number seems pretty high for a Stanford head football coach. It is Sabanesque.

If you want to see something else ridiculous- look at what Pitt is paying Narduzzi. $4.8 million a year for what?

He gets paid more than the coaches at Oregon, Oklahoma State, Wisconsin, USC, Florida State, Notre Dame, and Harbaugh at Michigan.

It’s a good point and there’s some similarities to both our program and Stanford in the way both are funded and viewed by the respective BOTs.

David Shaw is not deserving of 8.9 million per year, not even close. Inflated salaries like this embolden middle of the rode coaches with limited success to ask for unrealistic increases and bonuses.

How about this, a base salary of 3 million and 250k per win (includes conference championship game & Bowl game). Right now Shaw would be at $3.75 million and busting his “@&$ trying to figure out how to win his next three games.

Final: Utah 52, Stanford 7

Stanford is 3-6.

$9 MM.

There is more to it than he makes $9mm. That number includes unique, one time bonuses and retroactive salary payments (over $2mm worth). His base is somewhere around $6.8mm. He’s also being rewarded for a 90-36 record over 10 years which includes three PAC 12 Championships. Also worth noting his HC position is partially endowed. It’s a lot of money though, and it’s a bit hypocritical coming from Stanford who, outside of Harvard and Yale, has the biggest endowment in the country, and who also threatened to cut 11 varsity sports because they cost too much money to maintain (since decided against it after donors got pissed).

Obviously that salary is ridiculous. But Shaw really is a perfect fit for Stanford. Good coach, good man, represents a great university well. I think they are willing to pay more for that. If they win 9-10 games once in a while, that's a bonus.

Jolly good that Shaw is well endowed. He still doesn’t win enough.
