Just because 2 teams played an entertaining game in Week 1 doesn’t mean both teams are better.
We’ve seen this play out a number of times, where a game is entertaining and immediately everyone thinks we watched 2 good teams only to realize both were mediocre later in the season. My candidate for this season is USC & LSU. I won’t be shocked to see both teams look pedestrian as the season goes on.
The same goes for anyone beating a highly ranked team. GT’s win against FSU last week suddenly doesn’t look like near as big a deal. Not their fault but it’s the truth.
And of course, a close win might look better as the season goes on. Us winning an ugly game against UCF a few years ago comes to mind…and that game ended up being their only loss of the season. But man, we came out of that game very concerned.
I won’t be shocked if the ODU win looks a little better, on paper only, when the season is over. We’ll never forget how ugly it was and how poor the offense played. We won’t feel better about that.
Still way too much is unknown to make dogmatic statements (such as we have no chance against so and so). Those hard takes get the views and the clicks, but we should all know by now a ton of things can change. For example, if Cam Ward goes down…Miami is probably a completely different team.
