until you are done with your eligibility. So he has one year left and then can apply for a med RS.

but he played in the fifth game, so I guess a redshirt (even medical) is likely out. State says he only has one year of eligiblity left, although another school may interpret it differently and try to petition for two. Thus, he wants to transfer and have a chance to play. </p>

Also, I think the culture was a bit different to what he was used. And the coaches, particularly Croom, weren't all that thrilled with the way he prioritized. </p>

....you can't participate in more than 25% of your team's contests, or something like that. Someone else can go find it.

But this was discussed last year, he only played in the Auburn, GW, and SC games last year, being held out of the first two for being a dumbass, so he actually fell under the participation threshold, whatever that is.

The other part is that you can't have played at all in the second half of your team's season. Riddell met both tests and was qualified for a medical redshirt. I'm sure he'll transfer to a I-AA school and look to play the 08 and 09 seasons there.

A medical redshirt is pretty automatic. If you meet the 2 tests: <30% of your team's games and none in the second half of the season; and you have a documented medical injury, you get the redshirt. The 6th year is not automatic and has to be petitioned to the NCAA after you complete your eligibility. Generally, you have to have missed 2 seasons due to medical reasons (although Jackie did get one football player a 6th year because of a family situation where the players father was very ill and he missed a season because he was going back home every weekend).

There will probably be an open try out for walk-on QB over the summer.
Only at M-State....

Why wouldnt he?
He missed Spring practice, he probably opens Fall camp as #3 on the depth chart. Means he has no chance to catch Wes this year barring injury. .
Remember 3rd guy gets almost no reps. At best he only has two years of eligibility remaining
Guy has skills in my opinion, he should go somewhere where he has a chance to play.

in my opinion. He would of been third or fourth string and probably would of only seen a handful of snaps the whole year. This loss doesn't hurt us. It frees up a spot for someone who is/was being asked to grey-shirt.

But with his questionable habits, I wonder how a post-knee-injury Riddell would really do.

We've got a solid foundation people. We don't need a quarterback. We don't need no stinkin fancy high scoring offense. We got ourself a foundation. A foundation for the mentally retarded maybe, but it's SOLID!</p>

2004 was no picnic either. Didn't we lose Darren Williams, Nick Turner, Donovan Davis, etc., to the "coach with character above all else?" If you compare to our current small mess, aside from Anthony Johnson and Mike Brown, the others were easily replaceable (including a hobbled Riddell).

It sucks all the way around, however.

No reason to freak out over this... He was a great talent, but he's from Oregon, and he probably wasn't going to see a bit of playing time this year. His knee is still bothering him, so he probably just wants to go IAA and finish on the field.

If only for depth purposes, I wanted Riddell to stay. The timing is kind of odd.

That leaves Carroll, Relf and Lee as the only scholarship QB's. I wish Croom wasn't so freaking accommodating to players who aren't happy. Jeez, make 'em sleep on it or something.

he was looking pretty good in the SC game till he got hurt. Not sure how his rehab was going, but he would have been better than Carroll this season provided his knee allowed it. Missing spring practice is not a big deal when you are 21 or so like he is.

This is not good news people. And whats sad, this isnt the first time we have had only 3 QB's on our roster. In freaking D-1 SEC football....wow

If Riddell had stayed, he might have worked his way back into the #1 QB job. For all the love Carroll gets, he was one of the worst QBs in the SEC last year. I know he was a true freshman and there's a lot of things I really like about him, but it's not exactly like we're set at QB. And his backup is a player who was never offered a Div. I-A scholarship by anybody, either coming out of HS or JUCO.

Croom has screwed the pooch once again. It shouldn't have come as a big surprise to him that Henig's career is over or that Riddell transferred. Hell, most of us speculated about both of those things happening back during last season.

Even if Wes ends up having a great season, what are the odds he is able to play every game, every down for us? When was the last time we had a QB not miss a series, quarter, game? Even if Wes does great we will still likely need someone to take a snap here or there at least, and it would have been nice to have someone with SEC experience stepping in there.</p>

From what I heard, Riddell was told he would have to compete for the 3rd spot and not #1. I'd leave to, the guy did get in some trouble last year, but it wasn't the end of the world, like Mr. Do Good Croom thinks. From what I saw last year, he was the better qb and never really had a chance to prove himself. He will play somewhere else this fall and I'm sure he'll get his medical redshirt. Croom's an idiot.
