In film school my daughter had a class taught by Matthew Arkin, one of Mr. Arkins sons. When she had an assignment to do an interview with a public figure she asked Matthew Arkin if his father might consent to be her subject? He said, “Let’s find out”, and called him on his cell phone.

Mr Arkin was in a limo heading to the airport. He immediately said yes and spent 30 minutes in conversation with my daughter. I say conversation because he asked her more questions than she asked him. He was kind, generous, and truly interested in a 19 year old from Podunk Pa. He ended the call by asking her to send him a copy of her paper.

I am saddened to learn of his death. He was a good man with a good family. There is nothing better than that. He leaves behind a legacy anyone would be proud to have

Excellent article in the NYT on Arkin's minor but highly effective role in Glenngary Glen Ross. Mamet's plays are the best but are very complicated for actors. Arkin, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris, Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin all dynamite with a tough script.
