I have mentioned here before I grew up in a huge ND home... Dad was double domer, 2 uncles and a cousin (captain of woman's swim team) all ND grads & my Mom grew up in South Bend. My Dad had an "Oust Faust" bumper sticker on his car after his first season. Faust came straight from Moeller HS to ND. Back then ND had never "fired" a HC so they had to ride out their bad decision. However, the AD tapped Lou Holtz before Lou took Minnesota job and Lou had it written in his MN contract he could leave his committment only if offered ND job. Gerry was a far better man than a college HC. RIP

Seems to me people recognized early that he was in over his head. I wonder if any one or two games stand out as being representative of his ineptness?
Jim from what I recall , it wasnt one or two games that were the issue, it was everything else, Sunday- Saturday that was the problem. Practice, schemes etc where he was in over his head.

By the way, my father his brothers and their sister were all huge Notre Dame fans. I was too, at the beginning; the first football game I watched start to finish was ND MSU 10-10. I can remember my Uncle Bill asking me, in shock, “You no longer like Notre Dame?” And my aunt is a CSC nun, graduated Saint Mary’s and went to every ND home game her four years there. “Oh, Aunt Mary, Notre Dame and Penn State are playing this year!” “I’m sorry for you.” lol, trash talk from a nun.

I would just like to point out that no one in my family liked Notre Dame.

That said, RIP Gerry. If people remember you for who you are and not what you did or did not do, then you have made your mark on this world.

I hate ND because of the subway alumni where I grew up but had to grit my teeth and smile for 4 years when my son went there to play baseball. I got to experience the arrogance of the administration and athletic dept.
I am back to hating them with a passion.

Sad that ND put winning over ethics. Holtz left a mess in Minnesota and IIRC in Arkansas before that. His bagman Luther Darville took the fall at Minnesota. Faust seemed to embody all things ND stood for except winning on the field.

RIP Coach Faust.

For a while Notre Dame required that their recruits have taken HS PreCalculus, no PreCalc, no admittance. I mentioned this fact on the old board, forget exactly when, and Art challenged me on this. Turns out that Art was correct but the rule had been changed only the season before. There was an All-B10 RB at Michigan State who was ready to go to Notre Dame but not admitted because of no PreCalculus. (I expect that someone will be able to identify him. I would do this but Jane is on my *** about something else.) I’m pretty sure that this happened during or after Willingham’s tenure.

I didn't know anything about the pre-calculus requirement, but I did learn that Randy Moss was headed to Notre Dame until a battery charge against him while in HS surfaced.

Note to self: always check to see if you can remove the word “that” from your post. You almost always can.

Yeah, this is a fact. That was a spherically ugly incident (ugly from whatever perspective you take). Is this simply a “Hey, here’s a fact” mention or do you think this says something further about Notre Dame?

It was TJ Duckett, during Bob Davie’s tenure. Not quite how I had the story in my mind (he could have taken PreCalc in summer school), but whatever.

Guilty. Most all of my posts distracted posts. :ROFLMAO: That, and I should take a remedial grammar course.

Cheers!
