i just watched a documentary on him 2 nights ago. Love the story of him and Hacksaw Jim Duggen (who would fight each other all in with the Iran vs USA theme) got arrested for driving in a car together drinking and doing cocaine. Loved the Iron Sheik. RIP

I met the Iron Sheik when I was in high school in the early/mid 80's. My HS held a wresting event in the gym and a lot of the stars were there. I was not a wresting fan, but I recall the Sheik, Hulk Hogan, Sargent Slaughter, Lou Albano were all there. We had an away basketball game that night and we were in the locker room packing up to go as they were all coming in. We were all in there together for about a half hour. Some idiot on our team actually got into an argument with one of them. It may have been the Iron Sheik now that I think about it. I recall Lou Albano was a really nice guy.
He was a legend showman Never forget his "championship win" over Backlund, his soon thereafter loss to Hogan, and the tag team with Nikolai Volkoff and how they stirred the crowd into a frenzy with Volkoff's rendition of the Soviet national anthem and Sheikh saying "Russia #1, Iran #1, USA (spit)"
"Eron number vun, Roosha number vun, USA...hock tooey". His patent slur before matches.
You might be surprised at how much Art knows about wrestling. He showed that on the old board.
