Saw The Band numerous times including with Dylan at the Spectrum for the Sunday afternoon matinee show when they played two shows that day. He was and they were, incredible.

The bad blood is not uncommon and bands can be as dysfunctional as families. RIP Robbie.

“ They got it now Robbie”.

Oh man, that one hurts. I was recently golfing with some buddies. We talked about if you were on a desert island and could only have the music of one group, plus the solo work of the members of the group, who would you pick? I chose The Band.

A great Band tune, 4% Pantomime. Vocal battle between Van Morrison and Richard Manuel! Top shelf! And the story behind it is great!

I have had them in heavy rotation for many years and have seen the Last Waltz numerous times - not many of the greats left anymore.

The architect of all of the Band songs, Robbie Robertson, has passed.
80 yo. Only Garth Hudson is left. One of my favorite bands of my youth.

As we hear of such things more and more frequently, I keep asking myself how did we get here. I used to shrug my shoulders when my elders would say life is short. I now know what they meant.

I very much enjoy the posts on this board but almost never post. But Nits74 post about “life is short” reminded me that in 1974 as a young lawyer I worked on a case for The Band against their manager Albert Grossman. After obtaining the result The Band wanted and after I moved to LA in 1975 I took on the final job of getting the firm’s bill paid, which included visits to Robbie’s house in Malibu. A fond, but distant, memory.

I play the Last Waltz all the time still. What an outstanding concert and way to go out. Also if anyone can confirm... not sure if true or rumor but I thought I remember hearing that Levon Helm literally never sang "The Weight" after the Last Waltz. That he thought in that concert it was sung the way it was supposed to be done and he could never match that perfection of notes etc again... " No idea if true I looked a little on the internet for it but didn't see anything either way on it if he ever sang it again.

You might have it confused with The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. I saw Levon after The Band when he toured with his daughter and knew people who would trek to his barn to see him. I can’t remember specifically what he didn’t play or what my friends told me about the barn shows. I definitely remember him opening a lot with Cripple Creek and encoring with Rag Mama Rag. His illness and vocal stress after recovery might have limited certain songs, I just can’t recall.

I knew people who went to Woodstock, i don’t know anyone who went to The Last Waltz. For my money, rock’s greatest night of music ever held.

You are correct and remembered after I posted that. I have been poking around the interwebs looking for more information on it before I came back here and updated the post.
