Im so sick of this man being martyred as if he did something great. He had a solid career at MSU, but why are so many people set on giving him legendary stature (even prior to recent shenanigans)? Great players and coaches win championships. To me, and I know cuzdawg will agree, his legacy does not have legendary status because:
1. He never won a national championship
2. Hasn't won an SEC title (at MSU) since 1989, which is before the conference became so competative
3. Often underachieved (See 1985, 1989)
4. Retired/resigned 3 different times
5. Had dismal teams during my college days in early to mid 90's (Mackin, Redd, Petrulis, Loewer, thanks guys)
6. Produced several coaches whom have still failed to win anything (McMahon, Steve Smith, Kieth Madison, Mark what's his name who was canned at AtM)
7. Coached at a rival SEC institution after leaving MSU
8. Overstayed his welcome
9. Was ejected from all three games in a weekend series
10. His ego
11. Recent actions should be the nail in his "legendary" coffin
If any coach in college baseball is legendary it should be Rod Dedeaux or Skip Bertman. (By the way remember what happened when Bertman hand picked his successor, but I digress). Anyway these guys won something, they didn't run their mouth and speak about their own legacy. Ron, its time you got over yourself. You destroyed everything you created and for THAT you will be remembered.
