CFB roster management is certainly become complex in the current game with the ease of transfer (one time no sit out rule). Then there is the added complexity of COVID year players (at least until 2025 when that ends) as grad transfers with seemingly unlimited transfer rights. there also seems to be a more liberal interpretation of medical redshirts as the % of those have gone up. The ability of a player to earn NIL from their brand also can keep the older players who will never be pros hanging around longer. certainly has hurt the direct from HS scholarship players' opportunities.

teams almost need a bigger staff than the NFL teams, where the players are at least under contract. maybe why some good coaches are cashing out early.

As part of the roster management one thing not many schools seem to do is try to retain players through position flexibility. they will go try to grab a transfer player over looking at their own roster to see if there is a player who can move to a logical spot and be effective. they will seek a DE transfer rather than seeing if they might have a DT who could move over or a LB who can move up. many teams have players who played positions in HS but have now become specialists. maybe one of those players could move. that avoids losing a player and having to go get a transfer. seems like they are leaving an opportunity on the table.
