I don't know what the beef with Saban is.

His job as Alabama's coach was to win games. He did that by any means necessary within the rules.

Now that he's not Alabama's coach, he can be more candid about his opinions on college football. What exactly is he saying that is so off-base?

Rules were bent for Bama. That is the beef with Saban.

What rules were bent for Bama?

And if you’re talking about paying players under the table before NIL, every school did that via unofficial agents.

When everyone is willing to pay for 5-stars, the money is a wash. Bama got the best players because Saban was the best at two things:
  1. putting guys in the League
  2. winning championships
You can say they only got players because they paid them, but there were 30 other programs that would have paid the same amount. The money only gets you in the door.

You answered your question.

So when NIL started, Saban was the first coach to come out and said his QB had almost a million dollars in NIL deals (which was legal). That was a siren to all recruits to come there. Then, Ohio State came out and said their QB had almost 4 million dollars in NIL deals. Thats when Saban came out and said it needed to be regulated. He is still complaining about that to this day. That should sound some alarms.

As far as talent goes, Saban left after he didn't win during the NIL period. It was the only 3 year stretch he didn't win one. The reason he put so many players in the NFL is because he was able to load up on talent, not because he coached up average players. Most anyone could have put lots of players in the NFL with the players he bought.

If the money was a wash, then why did his recruiting drop off and he didn't win a championship for a 3 years stretch, which was the only 3 year stretch he didn't get one while at Alabama? The answer is that it became a wash after NIL, which is why he retired.

This three year period of Alabama's talent "drop-off":

2021:
  • 2021 recruiting class national rank: #1 (247Sports)
  • 2021 team talent composite national rank: #1 (247Sports)
  • Record: 13-2 (7-1 SEC)
  • SEC champion (defeated Georgia in SEC Championship Game)
  • National runner-up (lost to Georgia in CFP National Championship Game)
2022:
  • 2022 recruiting class national rank: #2 (247Sports)
  • 2022 team talent composite national rank: #1 (247Sports)
  • Record: 11-2 (6-2 SEC)
2023:
  • 2023 recruiting class national rank: #1 (247Sports)
  • 2023 team talent composite national rank: #1 (247Sports)
  • Record: 12-2 (8-0 SEC)
  • SEC champion (defeated Georgia in SEC Championship Game)
  • CFP appearance (lost to Michigan in OT)
So the reason this 72-year-old retired is because of a talent drop-off?

There’s a 247 Bama board for that.

Well seeing as his first 9 (yes nine!) years in a row he had the #1 class, there absolutely was a talent drop off. And was I correct that he didn't win a national championship in that time? Was there another 3 year period during his time there that he didn't?

I never said they would be completely void of talent. They will always get highly rated classes. Because of that, they will havs good seasons. But the talent level gap closed and other coaches who can coach up their teams better (like Harbaugh) and that will mean that Saban wasnt going to win national championships anymore. And that is the reason Saban retired.

If you think he is the best at coaching players up, let's just ask him.

“Do you think you’ve hired the best coach in the country?” the 55-year-old Saban asked Moore.

“Why, Nick, of course I do,” Moore said, while thinking to himself: For $4 million a year, I sure as hell hope so.

“Well, you didn’t—I’m nothing without my players,” Saban said, locking eyes with Moore. “But you did just hire a helluva recruiter.”
