“You know, we’ve kind of gotten on their, sort of, fans a little bit. But, you know, these Ohio State fans? You know, they’ve got a psychotic obsession with Michigan and they need to go get therapy or something to try to get it fixed,” Saban said. “They have a chance to win the national championship and here you are, you know, and nobody’s excited about their opportunity to play because they, you know, lost to Michigan, which was a tough game and they lost the game, probably, by some of the mistakes that they made. Those are correctable things.”

I think we need to purge our care for Ole Miss out of our fanbase as well. We all know those guys that are happy to go 3-9 as long as beat Ole Miss, and care more about what they do on any given Saturday than what we do. Had that happened this year, even if Ole Miss had 13 turnovers, we'd have fans wanted to give Lebby a 10-year extension. We have a president that wanted to keep Sloppy Joe after the 2019 Egg Bowl that was gift-wrapped to us. And I'm not immune, I used to have a little of this in me as well.

This thinking holds us back. Especially in this era of diminished rivalries. If they have an idea that is a good idea to copy, so be it. We did it with the Junction. But I don't think we need to be copying their football program at present.

It’s less of a zero-sum game between tOSU and Michigan. There are more limited resources in MS.

Pass. Rivalries are fun and I'm only into this hobby for fun.

I don't think it holds us back, if anything it pushes us to be better to try and make sure we are always better than them.

Ole Miss losing will never be better than us winning, and I'll never be fine with us losing as long as ole miss loses too. But I absolutely will take joy in them losing along with us winning.

Understand that but that's old school thinking. They aren't going away, they've proven that with their spending resolve the last few years. The better path is for the state of MS to just grow and benefit both of us. We aren't going away either.

I spent years hoping for an Ole Miss implosion or some crazy probation that would cripple them and make the path easier for us. Probation happened twice, and they built back both times, and we really didn't take advantage (and same for them honestly). Then they had the Houston Nutt meltdown, and we did nothing with it, they still always out-recruited us. Yet some of our best years were also good years for them. So that tells me that our success isn't nearly as tied to each other as some of you like to think.

The cultures are different, we recruit totally different players, in high school and the portal. And the portal is damn near a national thing for everyone, that whole state resources thing is less and less each year.

Nothing wrong with rivalries, I like them too, but the sport decided they didn't care about them when they started playing less of the regional OOC games and then ending long-standing series in the name of TV. Oklahoma/Nebraska anyone? It's about the playoff now.

I don't think any of this is real, but even it were, if caring more about your rival being down than you being up was really that bad for you, there would just be a smoking, desolate hole where Um used to be. They are the fanbase that gets their entire identity from thinking they are better than other people (although I think that's decreased some now that they are filled with out of state people that couldn't get into the public universities in their state; probably tough to keep that attitude when you go back home).

State and Ole Miss were way too complacent with Lonnie Tinkle and Pete Boone, respectively, because both of them being ****** at the same time let some people say "well it's just hard for poor ole mississippi schools". But that's a little different; benchmarking is a thing and it's natural for State and UM to compare themselves to each other, although they both put a ridiculous amount of weight on that one data point.

I really don't want to play those pricks. Worst sidewalks band wagon rider fans in the world. When they suck you don't hear **** out of them but when they are good, they come out of the woods you just ask where have you been.

BS. Ole Miss is the first measuring stick we have to match for success. Until people realize that MSU football will never be be anything. Your attitude is what keeps us on the bottom.

Oh, like our entire history? We've been trying it your way forever and look where we are.

My attitude was much like yours (not quite as saddled with inferiority complex though) until a few years ago. So you have no point.

Time to do things differently. But I know how hard that is for our fanbase. Cohen tried to change things up, and was crucified for it.

Ok there was 2019 and Joe Moorhead..... but MsU legend says Mullen didn't take the egg bowl serious a few years....

So other than Moorhead, has there been a time in MSU history, where MSU made or didn't make a huge decision based on a win or loss vs OM?

But Saban is talking about fans. Fans. Not players or coaches but Fans. I don't think it matters one bit how serious fans take a game. It's the coaches and players that matter.

You are clueless. Just witness the gloom and despair about EVERYTHING MSU after this football season. Had we ended the year beating them it wouldn’t be this bad. It would be fine if we were on par with them in football, at whatever level. Trying to say they don’t matter and we shouldn’t obsess with them ignores reality. I lived it when we finally pulled even in the 70s. If you aren’t what you appear to be, a total troll, your take on this is one of the most profoundly ignorant things I have ever seen you post.

It's not the fans here, it's the president of the school. But Saban is full of **** too. If he was getting it handed to him by Auburn, Alabama fans would be screaming too.

Concur, I don't get into all the OM hate, it's best to ignore them, not make them a big part of our fandom.
It’s not like we’re A&M or OU fans where they have “saw the horns off varsity” and “horns down” as part of their traditions and fight songs, even when they’re not playing against Texas.

It’s not like “Go To Hell Ole Miss” is in the lyrics of “Hail Dear Old State”, but hating those 17ers year round, wishing they lose every game in every sport (unless of course we somehow benefit from an Ole Miss win), and reveling in their misery is kind of half the fun of being a Mississippi State fan (well maybe like 3/8 or 7/16). In some years, their misery is the only thing making our misery bearable.

Not sure how taking that away is somehow a good thing.

I’m not really saying not to hate them and enjoy beating them. Just need to get rid of the inferiority thing and find the confidence to commit and support what’s best for US…..and not just doing something because Ole Miss does.

Dan Mullen, for all his talk, did NOT run his program anywhere close to how Hugh Freeze did. We were just lucky to have a strong head coach at that time.

We are going to have to completely rethink our program to have success. It matters now more than ever before, that we separate from thinking we are the same type school or program as Ole Miss.

Actually it’s you. If we don’t at least match UM in football the morale at MSU collapses. This board, and you, totally illustrate this. You are the best example of all, in everything you post on the subject. You sound like they do when we pop off a few in a row against them. I am laughing at you, as always!

You are the one arguing that beating the Confederates doesn‘t matter. Whatever you are, that alone means you are a total troll when it comes to MSU fans. You aren’t one of us, that’s a given by your own arguments, whatever you are.
