Jockey’s Ridge State Park near Kitty Hawk, home of some cool sand dunes and you can kayak in the bay near there. Lots of wildlife to see kayaking. Here is a map of the golf courses there. Never have played any.

Nice! It’s always on our list of places to go (supposed to be really family friendly) - would appreciate a report!

Spent some time in VA Beach a few years ago (13 and 14). Stayed in the apartments on Upton and Nimmo. I ate at Firebrew a bit, Masala bites and Nawab had good Indian food, Yama Sushi was really good as well. My favorite place though was breakfast at Doc Taylor’s in VA Beach proper. We went down to Sandbridge proper once or twice but nothing stood out.

Sandbridge (VA) and Kitty Hawk (NC) aren't exactly just down the road from each other. You're looking at a good 90 min. one way, likely with some traffic if you are talking about a Saturday or Sunday. If you decide to venture to any of the areas even further from the Wright Brothers Memorial Bridge (i.e. Duck/Corolla or South Nags Head), you're adding even more time. The drive to the northern beaches can be particularly brutal if it's a moving day for the rentals.

So a minimum of three/four hours away from a crowded house with screaming kids and arguing family members? So I can go visit a place I always wanted to visit? Waiting for the downside to this.

Kitty Hawk is nice - big field with a museum. It's not a big museum and you can do it in about 1/2 day. The actual area they flew from is a bit farther away. Depending on how long you spend there, close by is another marine museum that I liked a bit better, although I can't remember the name. We also took a boat tour where the dolphins swam up which was nice, and the wife liked the lighthouse tour.

As others have mentioned, estimate 90 minutes to 2 hours from Sandbridge / VA Beach area to the Northern Outer Banks.
The Wright Brothers Memorial is located at milepost 7.5 on Rte 158 South (Croatan Highway) in Kill Devil Hills. I've always enjoyed visiting...always learn something new.
The golf along the way is all good. Closer to where you'll be staying is VA Beach National - played there 10 years ago and had a great time.
I play Nags Head (home course) most of the time...
Currituck Club (sister club to Nags Head) is a great course - tough to get to (could take you close to 3 hours from Sandbridge), also most expensive. Best played in the offseason...
Favorites off island are The Pointe, Kilmarlic and The Carolina Club. Have played The Pointe a few times this year - in great shape as usual. Carolina Club is run by the same folks as The Pointe, so usually good conditions there as well. Both offer good value relative to the others on the list.
Lots of fun restaurants down here as well - Rudedude mentioned Tortuga's Lie... also Black Pelican for ocean views, Mulligans in Nags Head also has ocean views from upper deck areas.
If you have any specific questions about the area, let me know. Can connect offline.
Have fun!

It‘s been a few years since I’ve been to the OBX, but my favorite restaurant there is Ocean Boulevard in Kitty Hawk. Good martini’s and upscale food.

You can go out and see the plaques in tbe ground where the first flights took place.

A few other good places to dine: Sam and Omie’s and Mama Kwan’s for some Thai moneybags!

I’ll give you a suggestion, others who have been to the Outer Banks more recently than I can add their thoughts.

Queen Anne’s Revenge, in Wanchese on Roanoke Island. Possible disadvantage for you is you gotta go south of Kill Devil Hills, through Nag’s Head then over the causeway to Roanoke Island.

Seafood place, everything fresh, food is five stars, wine list is tremendous.

Check it out and you decide considering time and traffic if the juice is worth the squeeze.

I pretty sure we’ve eaten breakfast at The Pointe clubhouse a few times when leaving OB. It was fantastic. Sausage gravy on biscuits was my favorite to get the full southern experience. You don’t need to eat again for a long time after that meal.

Had property in the OBX for 20 yrs, up until 2 yrs ago, so know the area quite well. Our last 2 homes were in The Currituck Club, in Corolla. Best course around, but also the most expensive & Corolla would be a bit further drive for you than other options. As for restaurants, recommendations include: Blue Point in Duck, North Banks in Corolla, Black Pelican in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Grill in Kill Devil Hills and while a bit of a beach dive, Awful Arthur’s Oyster Bar in Kitty Hawk. Good breakfast place would be Stack em High (in Nags Head & Kill Devil Hills).

Queen Anne’s Revenge - name of Blackbeard’s ship, right?
