SC bill filed to pay athletes stipends

They get stipends already through their scholarships, grants-in-aid, financial aid. This just puts it in control of the Athletic Department, and seems to make it a more uniform amount across the board. It also looks like they don't get the money until after they graduate.

It actually pays student athletes based on the number of hours they spent on their sport using the same rate work-study students make and would be in addition to other funds. It also creates a trust fund, paid out on graduation.

We are headed quickly to athletes being employees of the university with direct pay for play as well as benefits etc.

As it's constructed, the stipends in this bill would constitute financial aid, so the employer/employee relationship is still averted. For now.
