I'm surprised at Davis' remarks about the SEC setting us and Arky to be each other's permanent football opponent when we each joined the league. Unlike Davis' opinion, from the SEC's perspective, it does make sense. Of course you would match the newest members up with each other. That allows the charter schools to continue most rivalries unfettered. They switched us to aTm so that Arky had the border rivalry with Mizzou.

I do agree with his take on the league now feeling like more of a loose alliance. Such is what happens when you have too many league members spread far apart. The 8-member ACC which we departed 50+ years ago felt like family (okay, we felt like the red-headed step child, but we weren't free of guilt).

I hope that with 16 members on the horizon, the SEC groups everyone into four-member divisions. Maybe something like:

Division "A" (East division)
UK
UGA
USC
UF

Division "B" (Mideast division)
UT
Vandy
Bama
Allbarn

Division "C" (Midwest division)
Mississippi
Mississippi State
LSU
Arky

Division "D" (West division)
Texas
OU
aTm
Mizzou

Play everyone in your own division every year in every sport.

In football, you can have a permanent non-division opponent - Allbarn-UGA comes to mind. Everyone else on a rotating basis in all other sports, except for basketball.

Play everyone in your division twice in hoops every year (both genders - yes, only two genders 😁). Play everyone else once a season, That makes 18 league games.
