Shackleton and crew are one of history's great all time survival stories. It amazes me that these men could survive with what we consider primitive means. I went to the Antarctic in the late '70's using the most modern technology available back then and it was no picnic, I can't begin to imagine the hardships faced by Shackleton and his crew.

In a semi related note, my old ship just departed Antarctica and is in Hobart, Tasmania preparing for its trip home to Seattle. They set a record for going further south than any ship has ever sailed before.

I went to cold weather training in Japan and that was the most miserable time I ever spent.

I think I could have been a pretty good explorer, but only above 70 degrees. No way I could handle that cold for any time.

And below 90. Too many biting insects and associated diseases when you get past that.**

We mariners used to say "That was back in the old days when ships were made of wood and men were made of steel."

I'm honest enough to say there's absolutely no way I could hack it on some frozen icepack or malaria infested jungle. Exploring is awesome to read about. Kudos to the insane people who actually do it.

I'm miserable after being out in the cold for a few hours. I can't imagine what those guys went through...
