Yeah he could do that but asking for your release has implications also. You have to return the prorated portion of the signing bonus. Not to mention the remainder of guaranteed money. He may have house or car payments that exceed what those leagues make. It’s bad enough that he won’t get a check for this year. Imagine repayment of signing bonus on top of that.
Those losses to the player occur anyway. He won't be paid for the time missed. The team can attempt to recoup that portion of the signing bonus pro-rated to the suspension period. And I'm pretty sure the suspension voids any remaining guaranteed money.

Ironic right? I remember in high school when kids would walk across the street off school property to smoke before school or at lunch. If the players that weren't betting on other sports besides the NFL would have done the same, they wouldn't be dealing with a 6 game suspension.
