What would it benefit the SEC to eliminate the divisions? Doesn't that mean more bowl games? Seems to me you would have less teams going for the playoffs. Someone help me here?

Hopefully, fewer bowl games and a true playoff emerges.

As other conferences are eliminating divisions, the reason/mindset given is that this will ensure just the top 2 teams make the Conference Championship game.

Why have a Conference Championship game other than money?

Well it is a lot of money! But I can see merit in not having the championship game. That eliminates one loss from your two top teams for playoff games. Of course that would be held against the sec in selection.

I sure am glad they waited to destroy college football until I was married and had kids.

The current state of affairs would have been disastrous in my single days.

Using this model is actually going to be a return to when there were no divisions. Having 2 divisions and a Conference Championship game was introduced in 1992, when conferences expanded from 10 to 12 teams.
3 conferences have already announced they will forego the divisional format in 2023, now the SEC will do the same. (maybe not in 2023).

Speaking to the overall state of affairs. But you're right that the seeds of destruction were sown back in '92.

That will be nothing compared to the hair brain idea the SEC is considering having their own 8 game playoff.
If you thought UCF proclaiming they were NC champs, was ludicrous, this will be on the same level.
No one, but no one is going to consider the SEC winner a NC if they don't bother to play anyone else. (SEC homers excluded)

Is that in all sports or just football?

There may be many good reasons to get rid of the divisions, but "because the other conferences are doing it" doesn't seem like a compelling one. Given the relative success of the conferences over the last several decades, those conferences should probably be more like the SEC and not the other way around. I say "SEC, follow your instincts."

Personally, I like the idea of 2 division champions playing in the championship game. It makes even more sense for a 16 team conference than it did for a 12 team conference.
