Shane Beamer sees merits in each as Lane Kiffin says SEC down to two future scheduling options
South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer said Tuesday that he sees merit in both future scheduling formats discussed by the SEC.
Hopefully, fewer bowl games and a true playoff emerges. What would it benefit the SEC to eliminate the divisions? Doesn't that mean more bowl games? Seems to me you would have less teams going for the playoffs. Someone help me here?
As other conferences are eliminating divisions, the reason/mindset given is that this will ensure just the top 2 teams make the Conference Championship game. What would it benefit the SEC to eliminate the divisions? Why have a Conference Championship game other than money? As other conferences are eliminating divisions, the reason/mindset given is that this will ensure just the top 2 teams make the Conference Championship game.
Well it is a lot of money! But I can see merit in not having the championship game. That eliminates one loss from your two top teams for playoff games. Of course that would be held against the sec in selection. Why have a Conference Championship game other than money?
FBS already has the most inclusive playoff in all of sports. A 130-team playoff.Hopefully, fewer bowl games and a true playoff emerges.
Using this model is actually going to be a return to when there were no divisions. Having 2 divisions and a Conference Championship game was introduced in 1992, when conferences expanded from 10 to 12 teams.I sure am glad they waited to destroy college football until I was married and had kids.
The current state of affairs would have been disastrous in my single days.
Speaking to the overall state of affairs. But you're right that the seeds of destruction were sown back in '92.Using this model is actually going to be a return to when there were no divisions. 3 conferences have already announced they will forego the divisional format in 2023, now the SEC will do the same. (maybe not in 2023).
You could state the same for FCS as well as D-II, D-III, and the NAIA.FBS already has the most inclusive playoff in all of sports. A 130-team playoff.
That will be nothing compared to the hair brain idea the SEC is considering having their own 8 game playoff.Speaking to the overall state of affairs. But you're right that the seeds of destruction were sown back in '92.
Is that in all sports or just football?Using this model is actually going to be a return to when there were no divisions. Having 2 divisions and a Conference Championship game was introduced in 1992, when conferences expanded from 10 to 12 teams.

There may be many good reasons to get rid of the divisions, but "because the other conferences are doing it" doesn't seem like a compelling one. Given the relative success of the conferences over the last several decades, those conferences should probably be more like the SEC and not the other way around. I say "SEC, follow your instincts."Using this model is actually going to be a return to when there were no divisions.
