Smith from Baylor
Manieri from LSU
Mike Hutchins from Air Force (former MSU GA0
Raffo.

Cohen is not on the list. Polk doesn't want Cohen. Apparently some bad blood betwee Cohen and Polk. Don't have a clue what its about. Get ready, Raffo is going to be our next head coach. Don't think Ron's decision wasnt pre-meditated based on the current situation in the Athletic Dept. Without any leadership Ron will be able to dictate the coaching decision. Thanks Ron.

Cohen would probably be "cruel" to players and cut them from the team. That's why Polk doesn't want him.

for Raffo. They know that Manieri probably won't leave LSU until he's forced out. Smith, while I think he will show some interest, is still a longshot. Raffo is next in line. If this is the list, Raffo is a done deal.

I find it hard to believe a Raffo tenure would be much better than the current Polk tenure has been. If Raffo is hired I will consider this strike one against Byrne.

At this point, I would think that one Gregory Kent Byrne is the only one who has any idea what names any supposed list contains.

What has he done at LSU that would warrant consideration? He's in year two in BR, and the team is just as bad as his first year. He has a brand new baseball park to look forward to/sell to recruits next year, and if he doesn't produce next year then he is gone. I like the guy and think he'll get it turned around but these first two years have been busts.

in the country last year and had ridiculous success at Notre Dame, a northern school.

My concern is that he is 51. I think he's just being tossed around b/c he was last time and he wrote that love letter about DNF so he is a believable candidate.

he is at a dead-end job at Air Force. If you go .500 there, you are a miracle worker. He also has won a NC at Bethel College.

I'm not endorsing him, but it's not like he hasn't had success before.

That said, we could do better.

he will turn them around.

As 8 said, they have the top recruiting class and it's only going to take another year or two, but they'll be back.

In order I would want:

Smith - He hasn't had much postseason success but he's been the best coach Baylor has ever had. Hopefully, coaching at a school with more resources would help him get over the hump.

Manieri - Again, very little postseason success but probably the best coach Notre Dame has ever had. He inherited a pretty good program from Pat Murphy and improved it. He's sucked so far at LSU, but their program was in shambles when he took it over. So he'd at least know what to expect if he took over our program. If he's hired, I doubt we'll even see the difference between his tenure and Polk II.

Raffo - I'll be highly pissed if he's hired.

Hutcheon - I know it's hard to win at Air Force, but 33 games in 3 years is a little ridiculous.

Why is that a concern? He's easily got another 10 good years left in him and possibly more.

My question is, who's list is that? As I stated before, I expect Vance Watson to make immediate changes to clear up the situation in the athletic department. So I think it makes a big difference who's list it is, as they might not still be working there soon. I think Byrne will be the AD by Friday.

isn't a ton of time. Hell, Bianco is in his eighth and I know Reb fans don't want him retiring in 2 years.

Im scared he'll lose the fire as well.

Edited: I will still be very optimistic though if we hire him.

And he's easily got at least that many left and probably more. If he can come in here and do a good job for 10 years, I'll be very happy. I'm not convinced he's the best coach out there, but he is a good one. And his age isn't an issue right now. Now if we hire somebody else and are looking again in 5 years, then yes age would be a pretty big issue then.

all I said was this is the list per strat. In fact a call has already been made to Hutcheon and it wasn't made by Byrne. If you want to bury your head in the sand and believe the AD runs the athletic dept. be my guest. And in case you haven't noticed, Byrne still works for Strat.

Polk should step down immediately and let Tommy interim coach. If the team gels the rest of the year he would have a little to hang a hat on. If they continue in the current manner, then it makes it easier for Byrne to open up the search.

I made this suggestion in an earlier post and never saw a comment so I am putting it out there again.

...that until Byrne gets sworn in, that Strat will be supervising any AD work that Byrne does? That's laughable.

don't you think strat would have a little idea of what is going on since the BC will probably supplement the salary of the new coach, like all the other coaches? And wouldn't you think that what strat knows, byrne knows, and visa versa. Decisions like this aren't made in a vacuum. if you think they are, that's laughable.

I talked to Hutcheon (he is my bro-in-law). He called Strat. He talked to him today and the list is pretty unlimited right now (including Cohen). No need for all this chaos. It sounds like this will be done the way it should be.

The bad blood between Polk and Cohen may have something to do with bad blood between Cohen and the previous UK coach, Keith Madison, who was a grad assistant before taking the job at UK. He was persuaded to apply for the UK job at Polk's insistence back in '78 or '79.

When he was at Bethel (just outside of South Bend) he helped Manieri with his camps. Manieri recommended Mike for the Air Force job. Manieri is highly regarded there because he won a record 20 games in one season. So yes it is impossible to win there.

Yahweh does not really hate MState and that this Cohen-free "list" is nothing more than a ruse to keep UK in the dark long enough to allow Byrne to maneuver without interference.

that Byrne will be doing the hiring, I wonder why Strat would offer up a list. I find that VERY unlikely. This post is likely BS. Strat just doesn't throw information like that around -- it isn't proper in his position to do that and he knows it.

On another note, why in the hell would Cohen not be on the list? The only reason I can think of is that he has already turned it down. Polk doesn't like him? Who gives a flip? Likely Byrne doesn't.

The only possible reason (and it is a horrible one) to give the job to Raffo over Cohen is money.

A friend of mine that played baseball for KY and supposedly talks to Cohen every week or so says Cohen's wife is not coming to MS. But, what in the hell else is he supposed to say? I know one thing -- he gets jittery when I start talking abour our next coach as being his present coach.
