Should the Masters be a shotgun start?

would a shotgun start be better?

  • clearly- it would level the playing conditions

  • no- the luck of the draw is part of the sport

  • no- a shotgun start is bad for TV coverage

  • wait, you're telling me that golf is a sport?

Obviously, the early tee times were a significant advantage yesterday- in the interest of fairness, would a shotgun start be better?

I think so for Thursday and Friday only
And on Saturday and Sunday the tee times are based on scores, the higher the score the earlier the tee time.

Edit. I wrote this for my own benefit and for the benefit of any other poster who doesn’t golf. I wouldn’t dream of thinking that I have anything to say about golf to actual golfers. Have a good day.

Not necessarily. With a shotgun start, everyone in the morning draw play under the same conditions, same for those who play in the afternoon draw. Fair? Not necessarily ... just think of having to start at #12 at Augusta vs someone who starts at #7. Same could be said of The Players Championship at Sawgrass ... imagine your first hole is #17. A disastrous 1st hole can ruin one's whole round.

Agreed. In addition, golf courses are designed with an eye to how each hole fits in with the one prior to it and the one after it as well as the overall design. Playing holes out of order is not consistent with the design intent of the architect and created potential advantages and disadvantages for players.

Really? I have opinions on lots of things that I know little about... LOL It's my little gift to mankind.

Over the years I’ve been wrong more times than I can count. I’ve picked up this life hack: If I’m not sure about something I’ll ask and I invariably get an answer. Works like a charm.

You'll certainly get an answer here on the McA board. Whether or not you'll get the correct answer is a bit of a crap shoot.

The weather isn't as big of a deal at the masters. With a small field they don't even do morning and afternoon flights.

Right. With only around 90 golfers, everybody starts at #1. In tournaments with 150 golfers or so, the morning and afternoon flights start at both the #1 and #10 tee.
