Is it sick that I find all this interesting?

From Yancy:
*The news on Josh Boyd committing to a school outside of Ole Miss does not come as a surprise as the Rebels have not been mentioned prominently in the interviews with Josh for a while now.

What does come as a little surprise is when the commitment took place and the school he committed to.

As we reported back to you a couple of weeks back, Ole Miss made a contact with someone who is close to Josh.

Ole Miss was in touch with this contact on Sunday (two days back) and this contact told Ole Miss that he was going to make sure that he stayed instate although at that time he was leaning towards Michigan and Alabama.

He never mentioned that he was going to help Ole Miss out, only that he would make sure that he came to the camp in July and that he would give all three state schools a look and a fair shot.

Well, he might still come to the camp in July, but now it will be after the commitment took place.

But remember, this is June, not February. Long/long ways until signing day.

The only thing we can go by now is that MSU now has the upper hand, no doubt about it.

**Now on to baseball. It looks like the propaganda machine is in full force down to the S' East as their media is pumping out that the Rebels have losing this and that player to the MSU bulldogs.

Coach Cohen, first of all, is going to make Ole Miss work harder than they did with Polk and his staff. No doubt about it. They have some good assistants and have gathered a very good staff, as a whole.

But what is going on is that the MSU staff wants to make a "splash" or a statement inside the state of Mississippi .

The problem is that they are having to over pay (scholarship money) to get these kids.

This also happened when he was at Kentucky . The first year Dan McDonnell was at Louisville , he literally swept the state of Kentucky . So last year, Coach Cohen decided to start giving 80 percent plus scholarships to the instate kids just to keep them at Kentucky .

The method worked as Kentucky literally returned the favor and kicked Louisville 's butt for the Kentucky kids.

But here is the problem, you only have 11.7 scholarships to give for your whole team, and if you are giving out 80% scholarships like hot cakes, what does that do to the rest of your team?

You do the math.

Coach Cohen left Kentucky 's squad in shambles as he spent almost his whole 11.7 scholarship money on last year's class alone and now the next coach will have to come in and clean up the mess he left them. Talk with anybody knowledgeable in the baseball ranks and they will tell you the same thing. Watch and see what KY does the next couple of years and you will see what I am talking about.

**Fast forward to the current date.

Ole Miss offered three players in Mississippi for the rising senior class.

They are Inf/RHP David Renfroe (South Panola), DH Ethan Bright (South Panola), and RHP Chris Stratton ( Tupelo ).

David, regardless of what anybody from the Bulldog media says, is unequivocally the #1 prospect in the state of Mississippi . You will not find one reputable scouting service that does not have Renfroe as the top prospect in Mississippi , has already committed to Ole Mis.

Yes, Ole Miss had to spend more money than they normally would to land David, but he is the exception and not the norm.

Ethan Bright was offered a 44% scholarship by Ole Miss and MSU offered Ethan a 80% scholarship.

On top of this, Ethan has been playing in the shadows of David for a long time and really wanted to make a name for him.

It really was an easy decision for Ethan to choose MSU because of these factors.

The problem with Ethan is that he really does not have a position. He is a big guy, around 6' 5", and is a defensive liability in the field, according to my sources. He is basically another Cullan Kight, which is a DH.

Would you offer a kid 80% scholarship knowing this and your whole team only gets 11.7?

RHP Chris Stratton, who our sources believe is without a doubt the #2 prospect in MS, was offered a 60% scholarship by MSU.

Ole Miss simply was not going to match that.

In the meantime, Ole Miss committed David Renfroe who hits better than Ethan Bright, and pitches better than Chris Stratton, and they had to pay less than a scholarship to match MSU having to spend 1.4 scholarships to get two players.

**All in all, Ole Miss is going to get the players they really want out of Mississippi unless MSU overpays the player. But OM would rather lose a player and eat up MSU's scholarship base and sign another out of state blue chip player than get in scholarship bidding war to keep a player in state.

So do not be fooled by the MSU media in leading you to believe that MSU is whipping Ole Miss' tail on the recruiting front and understand there are no other players in MS that Ole Miss has offered.

**The two players from MS that are getting the hardest look that have not been offered are Hillcrest's Chase Whotten and RHP Donnie Tabb out of Neshoba Central.

Donnie has a 14 on the ACT so he is most likely headed the juco or pro baseball route but he is a good one.

I know Gene is usually full of it, but Steve has always come off as a straight shooter when it came to recruiting.

Now, Rosebowl predictions for Steve? Not so much.

Regardless, this is hilarious. I dont have an OM premium account so please keep us updated on the red and blue side of the whole thing.

1. How would he know what mix of athletic/academic aid there was?
2. I find it hard to believe Bianco could only get him 44%. I think I know where that no. comes from. In 2010, you can only have 27 guys on athletic aid so evenly spread, that's 44%. Both guys qualify for Lucky Day money so I can't believe he wouldn't offer them the minimum (assuming an even spread---if its not even then that means he's likely paying too much for someone else) plus some academic money.

Im actually going to trust Gene and Rose 100% on this. And its really pointless b/c we had extra money for this class.

And Im sure the KY coach is fine with the "mess" that Cohen created at KY since the head coach was his top recruiting asst.

another site says he has a 3.5 and made a 20 on the ACT. i imagine he'll take it again and do better. odds are he'll end up with 50% or better athletic scholarship.

cohen isn't a fool. i doubt he's going to offer anyone 80% straight out of the 11.7. if this 80% is an accurate number, it's probably an estimate based on what cohen expects him to get from both academics and athletics.

that IPF has kids crawling on broken glass to oxford to be a part of the rebel family, be it football, basketball, or baseball. This is the attitude that they have always had concerning football and now that they are interested in baseball and basketball, we have to listen to it three times as much. Only alabama fans are more delusional.

it states that Bright has a 3.5 and a 20 ACT and Stratton has a 3.98 and a 24 ACT. From the Lucky Day portion of the ole miss website:

"Luckyday Scholarships are available to students who meet all of the following requirements:

• Entering University of Mississippi freshman
• Mississippi resident
• ACT score of 20 or higher (or SAT score of 930 or higher)
• High school GPA of 3.2 or higher (on 4.0 scale)
• Remaining financial need after award of other scholarships and grants
• Meet all application priority deadlines"

It's also needs based.

The recipients of this scholarship have to meet in study hall each week and perform community service.

They also generally live in the same dorm together.

I can assure you we have very few, if any baseball players getting Lucky Day money.

I read that post by Yancy, and I'll say that this particular one was about as bad as he's ever been. Granted, I'm sure Gene will do his best to out-do him in the very near future.

However, the point that scholarship money does come into play is definitely a real factor. I had a friend who was down to Rice and Ole Miss, but he chose Ole Miss primarily because he received a higher scholarship offer. Who knows if that is the case with Bright, but it's not ridiculous to think that something like that can and does happen.

There are players every year that I'm sure come to Ole Miss because we offer more, and I'm sure there are players that choose MSU because they offer more.

I don't think anyone is saying they don't think recruits factor in scholarship money or the fact that we offered Bright more. I know that would be a huge factor for baseball players considering the limited scholarships. I think the fact that Yancy is saying that we offered that much more and that's the only way MSU can outrecruit Ole Miss is what everyone thinks is so ridiculous.

And for that, you are definitely correct. Obviously, he's preaching to his sheep with those type of comments, but I thought he went overboard this time. Neither of our baseball programs is head and shoulders above the other, especially when it comes to recruiting. The idea that we'd never lose a recruiting battle with you guys in baseball unless you pay more is laughable. As I said and you said as well, we'll both win/lose a handful of battles on occasion due to discrepencies in the amount offered, but there will be plenty of guys that simply choose one over the other because they like the coaches, facilities, tradition, etc. of one over the other.

He went way off on a limb with the comments in that thread.

But let's face it, in college baseball giving up 80% scholarship gets you to 14-15 players. So 9 hitters + 6 pitchers if you went 75-80% on all of them and took walk-ons for the rest. If that's what it took to get above average talent, that's what I would do. With a roster of only 27, I'd offer everyone I thought was a top prospect 60+%. Most teams will be able to get a little depth from walk-ons with good academics and such.

15-16 above average players should get you further than 23 good players in most cases, barring injury. When the goal is the CWS, you roll the dice. I'm fine with this recruiting strategy.

Reading his comments sounded more like a letter from a psycho ex-girlfriend while she was on the rag, because you have moved on and started dating other people. I mean seriously Kentucky in "shambles" after reeling in what a top ten class. Now that's laughable. If that's what he meant by "shambles", then I hope we are in "shambles" pretty soon.

Narrow it down.

List the Mississippi players on the team.

List the Mississippi players that are actually on an athletic scholarship and contribute to the team.

Subtract the players that actually live on campus.

Subtract the players that have the gpa to qualify.

Subtract the players that do the 5 hr weekly study hall and community service.

Subtract the new players that actually apply for the scholarship 1 year in advance of when they receive it (requirement).

Subtract the players that have a financial need.

You get left with not many, if any......if for not other reason than the financial need.

I have no idea about baseball players (nor do I care)...but I can tell you that these two things are not true.. or at least they are not enforced AT ALL.

The recipients of this scholarship have to meet in study hall each week and perform community service.

They also generally live in the same dorm together.

Doesn't the new rule mandate that 30 players must be on 30% scholarship? In which case 14 players on 80% schollies can't happen, right? That being said, I'll take quality over quantity any day.

I think it's only 27 and they have to get 33%, but I'm not sure if that is exact.

If so, that's 9 scholarships.....with 2.7 scholarships left to spread over the 27.

you can only have 30 players on athletic aid in 09 and then only 27 from 010 forward. Anyone on scholarship must get 25% of a scholarship which must can be satisfied by athletic or academic aid. For example, you can give someon 10% of a baseball scholarship but you then must find at least 15% of an academic/service/leadership scholarship for him. Under this rule, in 010 and forward, you can give all 27 players at least a 44% scholarship. These new rules help to level the playing field that Polk bitched about so much, particularly the 35 roster cap.

There's no minimum number of players you have to give scholarships to. Only a maximum and a requirement that if you give a player anything, the total of the athletic and other scholarships he receives has to be at least 25% of a full scholarship. So, theoretically, you could have 11 players on full scholarship, 1 on a 70% scholarship, and 23 walkons on no scholarship (or purely academic or other scholarships). Here's the rule per Ballpark Digest.

Team roster size is limited to 35, with a maximum of 30 players sharing up to 11.7 total full scholarships in 2008-09, and a reduced max of 27 players in 2009-10 and beyond; and total financial aid packages (athletic and all other aid) to players must add up to no less than 25 percent of a full scholarship.

Lucky Day also has a cap.

Or at least it did when I graduated.

A multitude of people from my HS (NWR) applied for it (I did) and I only know of one, maybe 2 people who actually ever got any money from it.

On the subject, I know a player who was offered over 80% by ole miss and turned it down to take a much smaller offer at Mississippi State. Ole Miss has offered over 80% to players for years.
