I have great memories of growing up when the Phillies and Pirates were in the same division and played each other 18 times a year, or thereabout. Growing up as a Phillies fan, I have great memories of Parker being struck out by Steve Carlton. A lot. In fact, Parker had more strike outs against Carlton (35) than any other pitcher. It helped that they faced each other so often. It was always a great lefty-on-lefty battle. Parker didn't do too bad though. .258, 6 HR, 18 RBI, .777 OPS in 126 plate appearances.
The only other pitcher Parker faced more often was Steve Rodgers of Monreal. He was a righty which makes for the following weird stats. .240, 4 HR, 15 RBI, .646 OPS in 133 plate appearances. For whatever reason, even players as good as Parker had that one pitcher who just seemed to have their number. The fact he was a righty would make the analytics devotees heads spin.
And hey Pirates fans, remember when you guys threw batteries at Parker because he had the nerve to sign a big contract with the Pirates?? Nowadays you'd love to have an "A" list superstar in the outfield getting paid multimillions.
But good for Parker. He deserves it. Seriously.
