This is the current college football playoffs format criteria for the 2024 football from NCAA.com
The six highest-ranked teams remaining will round out the 12-team format."
Since the Pacific 12 has been disbanded that leaves only four power conferences. The criteria calls for six automatic bids for conference champions. I interpret this as the group of five getting two spots in the college football playoffs. Or will the NCAA modify the playoff requirements to five automatic bids for conference champions and seven at large berth?
If they do not modify the format and keep it at the six automatic bids for conference champions then I think this would be a good time for Oregon State and Washington State to join the Mountain West Conference where it could be an easier path to make the college playoffs
"How CFP teams are selected under new format
The new 12-team College Football Playoff field will include the six highest-ranked conference champions, which will receive automatic bids. The top four teams will receive a first-round bye to the quarterfinals. The six highest-ranked teams remaining will round out the 12-team format."
