Stallone hired Shavers to help with the Rocky movies and was sparring with him. He kept telling Earnie to give him a real shot and finally Shavers complied. He gave Stallone a body shot so hard it carried Stallone out of the frame of the camera. Stallone ran from the ring puking. Most contenders avoided him as much as possible.

Used to drive by the Shavers residence all the time in northern Trumbull county (OH) in the late seventies when I was working for ODOT in the engineering department for my summer job. Never saw him, though.

I met Ernie riding the Deuce in Vegas. It was a Manny Pacquio fight weekend. He was very nice. He had hands the size of catchers mitts. I wear XXL gloves and his hands made mine look small. Getting hit by one those hands must've been like getting hit by a sledge hammer.

When a boxing matches made prime time network TV it was really a big deal in my day. Ernie Shavers v. Ali was as big as any.

A very good heavyweight with solid power in both hands. He fought during an era when the HW division was rich with talent. Unfortunately, his chin betrayed him against opponents like Ron Stander and Jerry Quarry. He had a decent fight against Ali where he hurt him once or twice.

Sorry to hear about his passing. May he Rest In Peace.
