Let's say aliens inhabit Croom's body during a game and they call a "hook and ladder" play. So, Carroll passes the ball to Smith who in turn laterals the ball to a streaking Riley. Let's also say, Carroll has the presence of mind to trail the play. Riley gets into trouble and is about to be tackled. Before he goes down he flips the ball to Carroll who runs into the endzone. Does Carroll get credit for the touchdown as a reception, fumble recovery or rush? Also does he get credit for the TD pass or does the pass end as soon as Smith laterals to Riley?

I always wondered how stat officials "score" crazy plays.

Carroll gets credit for the completion and yardage, Smith gets the yardage for the catch, Riley gets the rushing yardage up to the point of the lateral, and Carroll gets rushing yardage from the point of the lateral to the endzone.

Carroll would get credit for a TD pass, that I do know...as far as the rest, I am not sure about. I know back in the option days even if a QB ran down the field 20 yards before he pitched it, the person receiving the pitch got the entire yardage.

Great question

Is it a sign of being old when you stop looking at the freshmen crop and start looking at all of their hot *** moms? Starkville is full of them right now.

...that threw a pass, it got batted back in his face at the line of scrimmage, he caught it and rushed ahead for 3 or 4 yards? Was that Carroll at Auburn last year? I just remember marvelling at his presence of mind to make something out of nothing.

How was that scored? A pass attempt? A rush? Did the defense get credited with a pass block if it was scored as a rushing play for positive yardage?

I know others have a much better memory on here than me; I just remember crazy snippets like that.

<h2><span class="mw-headline">"Hook and Ladder"</span></h2>

The "hook and lateral" is sometimes referred to as a "hook and ladder," which is a topic of considerable debate among football fans and analysts. Although the terms are used interchangeably by some, others believe this is not technically accurate. "Hook and lateral" may actually be a newer, more descriptive term for the play. However, since it is so commonly referred to as the "hook and ladder", perhaps this is actually an equally correct term for the play.</p>

One well known iteration of the play came in the aforementioned 1981 AFC playoff game, when the Dolphins surprised the Chargers and sent the Orange Bowl crowd into a frenzy.</p>

"We called it 87 Circle Curl Lateral," says Don Strock, the quarterback for the Dolphins that night (notice the name of their play didn't even include the word "hook"). "And, believe me, the damn thing never worked in practice."</p>

In current culture, the play is referred to as the "hook and ladder" on the cover of EA Sports NCAA Football 2008, possibly because the term has been used commonly by sportscasters, coaches and fans for years.</p>

You should have gone with:

Jack Crystal: Carrol takes the pitch and is going to race into the endzone for a touchdown.

Jim Ellis: Yeah, but there is a flag down back at the line of scrimmage in the area where you usually see offensive holding. This one may be coming back.

Jack Crystal: Let's go down to the field for an update. What did you see John?

John Correro: Yeah, Jack. It's going to be holding on the Bulldogs.

But then again that is his response to everything.

Jack Crystal: What is the atmosphere down there on the sideline as State is just seconds away from becoming bowl eligible?

John Correro: Yeah, Jack. It's going to be holding on the Bulldogs.

Having said that, the three of them have been doing State broadcasts as long as I have been listening to them. The subtraction of any of them would be a huge loss to me.

Pass attempt, completion, and reception by Carroll for 2 yard gain. It was the Auburn game.
