I think everyone just needs to understand that NIL is about to be gone and schools are just going to start paying kids.

I was always against it (and still am to an extent), but the second that USC (not Bama or Southern Cal or LSU) paid over $10 million to buyout a coach - I realized there’s plenty of cash on hand to pay the players.

I don’t like it, and the players won’t either when they’re treated like actual employees (perform or get fired), but that is the near future - and I mean two years from now.

That abberation was paid by donor(s) who couldn't stomach Muschamp for another second. AD also dipped into the general fund to keep the boat afloat b/c of reduced revenues over a single year (COVID).

How are they going to put programs like the one below back in the bottle?

Only the football and men's basketball? hahaha
Obviously the WBB, the baseball team, the soccer team, the volleyball team, every team will have have to be equally compensated.

Not sure how NIL is about to be gone. If a player can make say $1 Million from NIL, why would he settle for $36K. Or maybe I misunderstood your point?

I just mean that NIL is already a farce. These kids aren't actually getting paid for use of their name, image and likeness - they're just getting paid, and that's the model that will take over soon. Every SMU player's NIL isn't worth $36k - in fact most are worth $0. Actual 0. But now, even if an athlete has zero marketability (which is probably 95% of them), they are getting paid for their "marketability" through NIL. Just pay them and get it over with. (And also fire them when they don't perform.)

That said, NIL licensing will always be around, but only for those that have some real marketability.

This. The US women's soccer team already was a money hole and was completely subsidized by the men's team yet they just got "equal pay" meaning they're stealing even more from the men's profitability. No way a men's university team will be allowed to make more money than a women's team. Title IX is the reason cheerleading, a "sport" that makes no money, gets more scholarships than baseball. Just wait OP, everybody will end up with just as much money as football and basketball players and they'll all be treated like tenured/government/union workers and won't be allowed to be "fired" like real workers.

Well, presumably, the $36,000 payment requires some sort of participation in community service or something, so I guess they can claim it under the NIL umbrella. However, I'm sure whatever the requirements are, it will be minimal and not strictly enforced.

Hope it doesn't trickle down to D-II, DIII, & the NAIA.

Now, SMU can legally do what previously resulted in the death penalty for it's football program. In honor of it's Pony Express era, it could have named it The Trans Am Collective: Buying Players with Other People's Money.

I think this is a noteworthy point. Once you're an employee, a whole host of other factors come into play.

SMU ? Paying players 36K a year ?
Seems pretty cheap for SMU. This school has some very serious boosters, with very serious money.

I agree with most of that, but they are already getting paid, not sure how much, but between $700 and $1000 and month from what I remember. Why do they deserve more, I mean that is on top of the free education..
