Nothing was done to stop it. Stop playing? Mercy rule? Did they put in their 3rd string? What could be done except for the other team to be coached better. Surprised that they didn’t just say hey it’s over at some point during play. We used to Have the ten point mercy rule in soccer. Etc. heck doesn’t wrestling have that in place at all levels.

Sacred Heart Academy is an all girls Catholic School sponsored by Sisters of St. Joseph. I wonder what St. Joseph's take on this is?

Fired for losing. Suspended for winning by too much.

That coach sounds like a total dick. There is no excuse to press a team that’s so clearly undermanned for an entire game. None. I wouldn’t be surprised if they look into this coach’s history and uncover some other issues.

It’s a different world. In the 50-60’s we were taught to beat, but not embarrass, our opponents. When we got “way” ahead, the starters came out and we kept the score down. In football, run right up the gut, no passes or trick plays. Today, because of rankings, coaches want to beat the heck out of people. I did read the article and I believe it said that Sacred Hearts high scorer only had 13 points, so they must have used a lot of players??

I hear you but there is no scenario where the FBS eye test applies to HS girls basketball.

I've always felt that you owe it to your team to run your normal game plan with your starters for a half. Second half of a blowout is when you get your bench playing time. I'm not saying just stop playing, but running even a half court press in the second half was overkill. Would be a perfect time to practice killing the clock as you might need that experience in a future game. Also a perfect time to try new plays, or have some players focus more on skill development than just pure scoring.

Likewise, I think that the losing side in a blowout should also take the opportunity to get their bench some experience as well. If the winning team pulls their starters, you should pull your starters as well.

No excuse. Just stall and run the clock if there isn’t another solution
Run clock and play zone with the girls told not to cross the 3 point line to defend. PIAA rules runs clock without stoppage if one team gets up by 40 I believe.

Does "lose the game but win the fight" still apply?

Yeah this might be a little overboard. My 12 year old son's travel soccer team starts implementing things like 5 clean passes before anyone can shoot and if the other team touches the ball they have to start over, no one can shoot from inside the penalty box, etc when they are up a certain number of goals. One game my son had 2 goals already and they were up 6-0 in the first half. He got the ball and was literally 5 feet in front of the goalie with an easy chance for a hat-trick (which he has never had) and he purposely missed wide of the goal by like 10 feet. After the game, I asked him about it and he said he felt bad for the other team.

He shoulda put a hundred on their sorry asses! Just kidding!

Why are you kidding? If the losing team feels bad, how about scoring more? How about playing better defense? This is girls’ high school basketball, not kids’ pansy ball. Just win, baby.

Why do I keep thinking of the Monty Python Holy Grail scene where the soldier is in the house with all those chicks...."Mean, bad, naughty Zoot!" Then before he could leave he had tospank all the chicks, and then the oral sex! "I guess I could stay a bit longer!"

Obviously the coach could have called off the full court press earlier, and had the girls not half court press on D in the second half. Also could have told them to hold the ball and pass a lot more on offense.

My boy's 8th grade hoops had a somewhat similar experience a couple weeks ago. Team with a similar record in the same skill level division came into town, and our normally cold-shooting, good D squad just started making everything. His squad was up 31-0. They don't really have an organized press, but they sometimes get up court and apply man pressure, and that was quickly forbidden, and they were instructed not to shoot any more 3s. You could see that the boys purposefully called off the dogs and were much more methodical on offense, and lax on D, and it ended up being a 59-13 beating. Everyone plays the same amount of time on his squad, so they don't really sit starters ... but the better players did sit an extra half-shift or so.

In hoops, while you can't just stop playing, it's pretty easy to level the playing field a bit so that an obviously outmanned team isn't just pummeled, while still allowing your team to compete (just not as intensely).

Mercy rule running clock in HS is 35 points but it doesn't kick in until the 2nd half. As an official, if I see a team is overwhelmingly better and they're still pressing up by 25 or 30, there's going to be a lot of touch fouls getting called on the pressing team and if the coach says one word about it, I'm coming right back at him with the reminder about sportsmanship that we talked about in the pregame meeting. That coach should get a game to think about what's actually important and where he thinks a win like that is good for anyone, including his own team, is mystifying.

All depends on how it went down. In this case, no way in hell anyone with half a brain is still pressing in the second half.
