Please tell me that isn't true. If it is, that selection process SUCKS, which we already knew.

It's true.

They might even get a bye if they are one of the top 4 conference winners.

Yes, and they would go from ranked 17th in the rankings to top possibly a 4-seed and a first round bye. THAT is the absurd part. Ok, if they win their conference championship game and get it, fine. I can buy that. But to go from out of the CFP entirely to top 4 and a first round bye is nutso.

The main reason I keep screaming to do away with automatic bids!!!!!
Now I’m optimistic that we are trending up and we will have more opportunities to get in the field than just this year, but I’m also a lifelong Gamecock fan who has experienced this crap way too many times. It would be the epitome of Gamecock football history for us to get screwed the very first year while they’re still “working out the kinks” and then just flat out not be good enough to get in in the following years when everything is “fixed.”

Screw it! At least 1 lower ranked conference champ gets in above us (big-12/16) and possibly 3 (ACC and Mtn West).

Sure, that makes sense.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure it will just be a matter of luck if Clemson beats SMU in Charlotte. I hope I'm wrong. Very wrong.

Would anyone here really care about this scenario unfolding if it didn’t involve Clemson? If it wasn’t Clemson, we would probably feel like the playoff system was working exactly as it should, right? This, after all, was the whole point.

I wouldn’t feel as strongly about it, but I think I’d still feel like we’re getting screwed by the Bama brand. I mean, this happened almost every year during our 5-streak over Clemson. We’d beat them. Clearly the better team, and then they’d go beat some loser team in Charlotte and get great publicity playing in BCS bowls just because they were a conference champion. The difference is back then they never had a chance at a championship. That’s the part that is criminal.
