This happened less than 3 miles from my stepdaughter/son-in-law (and her 3 young kids). They were all over our home when this was happening, about 15 miles from the synagogue. Their father and I struggled a bit explaining what was going on when local news kept interrupting TV broadcasting.

Saw on twitter someone was was asking people to stop with islamophobia and that it was a peaceful hostage situation. Never seen a hostage situation that was peaceful.

This article raises more questions for me.

The brother is obviously distraught. Why didn't the brother talk him into giving himself up if he was on the phone with him for 10 mins during the siege? Why did the brother say it shouldn't have been allowed into the US? Was he on a terrorist watch list? He was a British national so why shouldn't he have been allowed into the US? What does the brother know that is not being reported?

As a non-Jew and non-Muslim, I still don't understand what people dislike the Jewish. I have many Jewish friends and co-workers so I just don't get it.

More people have been killed in the name of religion than any other factor. The Crusades, the Holocaust, etc. it just goes on and on. You would think religions would encourage compassion and understanding instead of aggression and war. It seems that people have little have little tolerance for those whose beliefs are different from their own.

Kids are ages 4, 7, and 9... basically their interest in the story lasted about 30 seconds and then they moved on to something else. My son-in-law was a little rattled though. Was doesn't seem to get much airtime with this story is the rabbi and the other hostages actually escaped before the HRT takedown.

The Rabbi and apparently many others across the country have undertaken security training so they would know in advance how to handle themselves in cases of such attacks and in this particular case the training he received was successful. Nevertheless it’s a sad state of affairs that such training is necessarily in this country and those of all faiths shouldn’t be free to pray in peace. Jews don’t just turn the cheek anymore and will not tolerate antisemitism in ANY form, as they shouldn’t. At my synagogue located in an affluent suburb, the police maintain a heightened security presence during Friday night and Saturday morning Sabath services and during the High Holy Days. Hate crimes are inexcusable serious offenses and millitant middle eastern groups and American white supremacists are flourishing, some even with marginal government support. Acts against religious groups, blacks, Asians, Mexicans, and those of differing sexuality are intolerable.
