South Carolina revealed Monday the new name for the live mascot, deciding to go with an homage to war general Thomas Sumter.

Roosters are naturally predisposed to defend it's roost, including against larger predators. It's this natural bravado that the British were equating General Thomas Sumter military actions to.

This is not a recent happening. The world's mores has quickly improved over the last few hundred years leading to a much more humane society.
