I think the Joe Lee hopes for 157 are officially over. Either the cut is too much or he hasn't improved any this off-season....maybe a combination of both.

Is it too early for takeaways?
*A redshirt for Facundo may serve him well. Bo and Nolf seemed to benefit, as I recall.
*Nice showing from Meredith who seems to be improving and could be a solid backup at 133 or 141 down the stretch. He probably put himself ahead of Evans as backup (who has also shown something this year)
*As already stated, doesn’t look like Joe Lee is our savior at 157. Negron will likely remain starter (deservedly so)
*Despite his impressive early season win over Julian Ramirez, doesn’t look like Matt Lee is our savior at 165. Edsall will likely remain starter (deservedly so)
*Let’s see how the next couple matches go, but doesn’t it seem like the addition of Max Dean has elevated Michael Beard’s game? Good for him to get better rather than get down.
*I wish I could ask Seth how different being in football shape is versus wrestling shape. I’m going to take a wild guess that 7 minutes of wrestling is unlike anything on the football field

Feel bad for Joe Lee. Maybe he should think about the portal next year if he wants to keep wrestling. A change might do him good.

Agree about the redshirt for Facundo, and any other true freshman for that matter. Making the jump in level of competition from HS to D1A is a huge challenge, no matter how much HS success any wrestler may have enjoyed. To see a graphic illustration of just how high the hurdle really is, all you need do is have a look at current Olympic Champion (then redshirting college freshman) David Taylor's November 2009 exhibition match vs Cyler Sanderson in Rec Hall. It's available on YouTube. By way of perspective while watching, remember Taylor was considered the #1 HS recruit in the Nation his Senior year while Cyler was a very good major college wrestler who had been an All American (7th place) at 157 for Iowa State in 2008. The difference between "#1 P4P in the Nation" in HS vs "7th Place at 157" at the major college level is very obvious.

I think I can provide some insight into your question regarding Seth. I remember Jan Johnson (LB) was loaned to Cael a few years ago. He said something to the effect of wrestling practice way harder and being in football shape doesn't prepare you for wrestling. Which makes sense. Football is a bunch of small bursts of energy. Wrestling is a much longer grind of constant energy use.

Makes what Spencer Lee, and other true freshman Champs, even more impressive.

I also think Zain matches Caels 0 in the loss column if he redshirts his TF year. He went out a pretty good 141 pounder and came back as a machine at 149.

To Update:

in the 197 final, Rocky Elam (Missouri) defeated Michael Beard by injury default.

I did not watch the match. From what I can ascertain, Elam got a TD in the 1st period, and then Beard had 1:08 of injury time. Elam then took bottom on the restart, escaped, and got a TD with 4 sec left in the 1st period. It appears that Beard injury defaulted between the 1st and 2nd period.

Pretty sure it’s a knee Tom. Feel for Beard. Had an outstanding tournament. Great kid.
