Overall there seems to be a bunch of question marks at this stage of the preseason.
1) Will the offensive line find their groove, by creating openings, sustaining pass blocks or not missing a designed run block assignment? Well, by the looks of it from the game it looked to me like the front seven looked good in terms of shedding blocks and penetrating gaps. Tons of miscues and several missed blocks for the RBs to get through to the second level. QB Pressure was constant. Doesn’t look like a good start for the O Line overall…
2) QB play was hit and miss, with more frequent misses than hits. Sellers is an improv artist that has a lot of potential. 6’3 230 QB who can run that fast and shoot lasers? I’m all in for seeing him as QB1 in waiting. Rattler looked like he had little time to get the ball off, either overthrowing or making hasty decisions but overall solid turn in. All QBs need to get a good read on the field by having more time via pass protection, and that clearly falls on the OL. As for Doty? He doesn’t look to be a starting or even QB2. Horrendous looks and accuracy. Bailey was alright but similar to Doty. Davis as well…
3) RBs: We pretty much saw the best runs from Dak Joyner & Mario Anderson, both of which showed resilience bouncing off defenders more often. Need explosive blocking and openings to get them loose. Miller and Juju are too small to play the inside like they have constantly been called to do.
4) Defense: Tackling looked better, Pass Rush looked vastly improved. SACK CITY but that’s also in question with the subpar performance from the offensive line on both sides. Few busted coverages on several plays throughout the night, but overall decent. DBs need to work on their route coverage and assignment duties.
Spring Game: C+ Overall… it’s too soon to tell where we land considering it’s just the surface level play to get these guys fired up for the season ahead. Loggains and White won’t give away too much for other enemy analysts and scouts to see, so we will see if these boys can really put together some major improvements from now til then to each respective system.
Comment below your thoughts on the spring game and any observations made.
Go Cocks!!!
