AKB, My girlfriend and I are leaving Sunday for St. Andrews and the British Open. We have tickets for Friday, Saturday and Sunday and can't wait to get there! We will be playing a round of golf Tuesday at Kingsbarns. Is there anything we absolutely must see or do in the surrounding area?

Been to St Andrews many times though that was 40 years ago when I lived in Scotland. The wool mill was usually a must visit for tourist, you can buy wool apparel. It was a pleasant little town for walking and shopping. But as I said, 4 decades ago, before anything resembling a McDonalds was in Scotland.

We were in Scotland last month and visited St. Andrews. It still is a pleasant little town for walking and shopping. But not much to see in the immediate area. Most of the must see places Scotland are in and around Edinburgh. The Edinburgh Castle was fantastic. The issue is St. Andrews is south of Edinburgh and most of the places you will want to visit. Even Loch Ness is not nearby. We spent a pleasent afternoon in St. Andrews, had lunch at the clubhouse and walked some of the course. The Old Course was closed to prepare for the Open so we could walk around (no walking on greens or in bunkers). You may be able to reserve a lunch or dinner date at the Clubhouse which was very good. But in one afternoon we were able to see St. Andrews.

Was in Scotland earlier this year, driving from Edinburgh to Inverness and opted not make a stop at St Andrews on the way(a person in our party heard the town was pretty cool and insisted we go but we didn't have time to stop everywhere). St Andrews seems to be off the beaten path to the North East of Edinburgh on the coast. If you are going to be there longer then the 3 days I would suggest heading to Edinburgh and surroundings which are only a little over an hour away. Falkirk has the Kelpies and the Wheel which is a cool piece of engineering. Stirling is close by as well as I hear the castle is very cool and the William Wallace monument are in that area. If you have time I would suggest getting into the Highlands and do some wondering about as it is a beautiful part of the country.

Elbow your way into the Dunvegan for a pint or 3 after the round. You will likely run into a lot of the golf cognoscenti there (players, caddies, agents, reporters). Sounds macabre, but take a walk thru the cemetery there. Some historical figures and see just how far back that area goes.

St.Andrews — Great fish and chips at Tailend; Town is small and easy to walk. You can pay your respects to Old Tom Morris at grave site in St Andrews Cathedral cemetery.
Edinburgh — Royal Mile. Edinburgh Castle has many “museums” inside. National Museum has a lot of history (free). Holyrood Palace allows you to see how the Royal Family live while spending a week in early July.

Enjoy a wee dram of whisky.

Played the Old Course at St. Andrews, Muirfield, Turnberry, Royal Troon and Kings Barns 4 years ago, Thought Kingsbarns was my favorite, most people in my group thought the same. Enjoy!
Agree on Kingsbarns. Fantastic layout. Liked it better than Carnoustie and Muirfield. St. Andrews stands alone.

There is nothing like teeing off on 1 at Saint Andrews and coming in on 17 and 18...
Never played there, but for those of you who have, do you agree with a friend's comment who played there probably 30 years ago that if it doesn't rain and the wind doesn't blow, the players will "tear up the course"?

That is the very nature of links golf (pun intended). No gimmicks, no rough to speak of (although gorse is the most penal stuff you can ever hit into), and a completely different type of game than what is played normally by the pros. The course’s defense is the weather. The last time I played there we had rain, snow, sleet, and sunshine all in the same 18 holes.

The rain doesn't matter nearly as much as the wind. If there is no wind, you will see a winner around -20....

It was an incredible trip and the people were extremely hospitable! We played Kingsbarns and the caddie told us to play the wind on the putts. First time I ever had to do that but overall the weather was great. After the Open had finished the allowed people to walk the course and we were able to get our picture on the Swilken Bridge!
