Statically Too risky to keep playing. They would eventually make the dance and lose their only claim to athletic notoriety.
Some interesting points on the teams with an empty dance card .

Feel for the kids. This is not a group of kids that will play professionally and for the most part their athletic careers will come to an end by the time they are 22.

I suppose it’s good the college will honor their scholarships though.

A lot of small schools are propped up by their athletic programs, helps keep enrollment up.

From this article, I was surprised to learn that Army has never made the ncaa men‘s basketball tournament.
Yep. Bobby Knight had them qualified
in 1968 but thought they would have a better chance in the NIT- where they promptly lost in the first round.

Just wondering, why not just move down to Div-3 instead of dropping all sports outright?

Just can't imagine me going to a school that has no sports.
Although no schollies in D-III there are still costs to maintain a program - coaching trainers admin travel etc must all still be paid for.

I would imagine that is a big part of it.

St. Francis is a commuter school. No dormitories and no on-campus athletic facilities.

If not for the hiring freeze, PSU could hire some of their leaders to help the transformation to a lean organization.

There are ways to offer a robust athletics program at smaller colleges but you have to be smart about it - some examples in the article below...

True, but if you're St. Francis and your "campus" is three floors of a renovated Macy's in downtown Brooklyn and few, if any, of your student body is paying anywhere near full-freight it gives you a different perspective on how to spend your dollars.

I think we're gonna see this more and more. The cost of receiving an education is skyrocketing and if your Athletic Department isn't generating revenue, then it's probably best to cut it out and focus on improving education.

But what if we don't play school?
