"That could hint at a possible early departure for Brandon Smith, who has been touted as a day one NFL draft pick by some prognosticators should he choose to go pro following his junior season."

Sometimes words come together to form a sentence that just makes you shoot coffee out your nose.

The comparison to Oweh comes to mind; very little production at PSU but has been tearing it up in Baltimore. Maybe people think that can happen for Smith, but he's not just going to go out there and rush the QB - he's going to have to improve his fundamentals, which some team may think is a quick fix (and maybe it is). Still, these guys succeeding in the NFL is great for PSU.

You never know, and there are plenty of odd stories out there, but I thought (just one guys opinion) that Oweh, for example - who has been doing really well in Baltimore- was 10 times the player Smith has been, while at PSU.

Smith was fairly productive as a tackler (81 total, 9 TFL). He's probably wrapping a guy up or getting to the QB 5-7 times away from being remembered a lot differently.

He does have his issues. He was not very good at diagnosis and gap integrity from the inside. His shoulder thump tackles are very weak. His blitzes seemed to have a 5% success rate.

Smith is a guy who is very likely to improve more between year 3 to 4, but has the measurements and combine numbers to get selected. I don't think he has Oweh numbers, but I think he put a slightly better year on tape in '21 than Oweh did in '20.
