Hello-
My son will be a freshman at PSU-University Park in the fall, but was unable to get a student ticket.

Does anyone have sons, daughters, relatives, etc. up at PSU now that know if there are dedicated message boards or other ways for students to buy student tickets from others if they want to see games? I have no idea how easy it is to for students to purchase a ticket from other students safely and securely. Appreciate the help.

There will be plenty of students selling tickets for single games throughout the season. My daughter missed out on tix both her sophomore and junior years and she had no issue purchasing tix for any game she wanted to attend. Tell your son to start asking about tix as soon as he arrives on campus and start to identify friends and friends of friends who regularly sell their tix.

Several different ways to find and sell tickets but here is one of the popular sites. Tell him to make a reasonable offer at the cost of ticket and make that offer to several sellers.

I appreciate the info. I get it that some kids are gonna try and pay off the entire season ticket package off of the white out or OSU game, but good luck getting $500 for a student ticket. But hey, if they get that, good for them.

Don't worry about tickets. He'll figure out the other ways to get them which usually involves a friend, and if not lots of students get together in many places around the dorms and other spaces like the HUB to watch together. He will probably also find that tailgating in the parking lot all game long can be a bunch of fun and many students with tickets just stay outside the stadium. Remind him that he will be welcome at most tailgates if he just walks up and says "hi, you guys sure look like you know what you're doing. Care for and company?" or something similar. Many RV's have large screen TV's hanging on there side which will draw a crowd during the game.

Not sure if this is still a thing, but there used to be organizations that would volunteer to sell programs, take tickets, help push wheelchairs for fans that could not walk to seats, etc. For this "work" you could get into the stadium for free. Sometimes a little late, but you were in. I did this in the late 90s with some Catholic group that my roommate was a member. United Way was another group that needed volunteers back then. Sometimes the "seats" were standing on the field in the south endzone. Great times.

My one neighbor sells hers and routinely gets that much for the big games. ( $ 300.00 to $ 500.00 ). Unfortunately, this season, she did not win the lottery. She is a foreign Grad student and never goes to the games. She is amazed at how much students ( or their parents ) will pay for a ticket.

Good. I’m glad she didn’t get them this year. She’s part of the problem with kids who actually want to go and don’t get them at the student price.

Totally agree but it all falls on the university and their unwillingness to come up with a solution for the kids that want to go. Sadly the athletic department only cares about getting paid.

They have a school of engineering, computer science. Figure it out.

I’m fine with kids who get tickets selling them to the highest bitter, but I think that it should not be a lottery. Reserve a certain amount for the freshmen who are on campus and the rest should be based on kids who attend the most extracurricular events from the year before. If they want to make the basketball student groups larger, or more involved, give them bonus points towards football tickets for being in the legion of Blue. Those kind of things would help the entire athletic department as well as rewarding the most involved students with higher priority

There was a time in my life where I would agree with you. But, she qualifies and participates in the open market for all things coveted. The university decided on the Lottery system.

The University should reset prices to find out what the true value of a ticket is, even in the student section, as those funds will be paying for NIL as well as a new stadium. Set the prices higher and see how many students sign up for tickets. Sell them on a game by game basis if necessary. The school is leaving lots of revenue on the table.

Eventually this will happen and students and families will pay way more anyway.

Yes, I’m just the frustrated parent of a student who got hosed in the Ticketmaster system last year and hosed again in the new lottery system this year. Meanwhile, freshman who haven’t set foot on campus yet that we know got them, branch campus students got them, and students who have no intention of attending got them. Just venting a bit on my part.

I agree but that would require too much time, effort and thought by the athletic department. They got paid so they are gone.Just don’t whine when the student section is half full vs Bowling Green.

I sent an email to Kraft last year. No response.

I sent an e-mail to Kraft and a few others I found in the university directory that handle ticket sales. I did get a response from someone at one of those e-mails. I also spoke on the phone with someone with a role in student tickets. Both responses were similar. The system is randomized. It isn’t perfect, but it is what it is at the moment. Little consolation, but at least they were willing to listen and verbalize an understanding of my frustration.

Just be aware of scams with the student ticket sales amongst students. Unfortunately, it isn’t always legit.

All Administrators anywhere near Kraft's level have at least two emails. The public email is only scanned by their assistant who decides what if any they'll get to see. They also have an email that they actually read which is kept secret from the general public, so Kraft most likely never saw your email.

I know a student who was a direct report to Barron and after the first week on the job he stopped by to ask why Barron hadn't responded to any emails. Barron apologized and explained that the public emails aren't read by him and supplied the student with his "other" email and several more emails for Administrators that were important for the project.

Kraft is a bit of a bag of wind. Unless it is him hearing himself talk I don’t think he cares.

Totally understand And sympathize. If I had a student at a big program school, I would feel exactly the same way. Hope he finds tickets to A bunch of games.

I don’t really understand why branch campus students would have the opportunity and incoming freshmen should have their own lottery if that is the system the continue to use moving forward.

He’ll be fine. In the overall scheme of life, it’s not a big deal. Probably more frustrating for me than him.

He'll get tickets if he wants them. Let it be know in his dorm that he is looking for tickets and if anyone can't go please contact him. My three just graduated in 2017, 2021, and 2022 and getting them from friends and acquaintances is still the best way. The big games are tough, but day before and day of people getting sick, or a project gone bad happens all the time and tickets become available.

While such a system sounds nice, is it really fair to make students attend, and sometimes pay more money, to attend sports that they have no interest in just to increase their chances of getting the tickets that they really want?

Sounds similar to the scam that Pitt tried with visitor’s tickets the other year.

Given the amount of money the athletic department needs to raise for the open ended stadium improvements, I wouldn’t be surprised if they have to resort to such blackmail schemes. Next step is to charge just to enter the lottery, or let you buy more than one chance to increase your odds.

Actually, this structure if done correctly in my opinion, would give more points for those who go to the less attended and thus non-costing sports games. I forget what school it was but one of my former students said somebody in the south does this. They said it’s basically one point for going to a men’s basketball and men’s baseball game because they have to purchase tickets for those. But for things like field hockey or gymnastics, students need to attend and have one of the members of the athletic department register them while being at the event and they get five points for those or something like that

My son and his friends went to almost all the home hockey games. He said it was a blast and the tickets were cheap. He went to volleyball and wrestling also. There’s something almost every night or weekend if students want to go, so I think your idea would work.

Yeah, the situation is stupid. My niece is in the first couple rows every game, shows up hours early, but when ticket sales time comes around, she's in no better position to land the tickets than someone who shows up in the 2nd quarter if they come at all. They should have the initial sale be in person at the BJC at 6 am. Makes sure the kids who are actually committed get their tickets.

Thank you for the heads-up and for others who chimed in with responses. It is appreciated. If I can play dumb for a bit, can you elaborate at all on the "scams" that go on with student tickets? I guess I'm trying to figure out how this happens if ticket are all digital, and of course, how to avoid it. And yes, I get it, smart kids can do crazy things with anything these days. I think the best advice given was to try and find friends that can't go to every game. I don't mind paying a little extra and am ok just not paying sick $$$ for the big games. I do like the points system idea that others suggested, especially if it was tied to attending other events.

As with anything, just be careful who you give financial info to. If it doesn’t feel right, follow your gut. Also, I have heard of sending the payment and not receiving the tickets. I think that’s why the school is looking to unveil the more secure transfer website.

It was much easier with paper tickets. A friend of mine didn't get tickets one year when we were students in the early 2000's (His family was on a multi-week vacation when the notice came in the mail and his reply was delayed) but he would walk by frat tailgates when we walked up to the gate and would almost always find tickets being handed out by someone who got too drunk that morning and wasn't going to make it into the game.

Not sure if you can do that with the digital tickets now, I recall there were issues with the exchange process having a cutoff time that initially was the day before the game.
