Taunting is penalized in NFL and NCAA. Why is Illinois exempt?

Taunting is a 15 yard penalty in the NFL. Ask Penn State if taunting cost them the Ohio State game this year. The NFL and NCAA apparently consider it a problem. Are regulations suspended for bowl games? Sportsmanship means nothing to Illinois. The players and the coach made it clear they have no respect for South Carolina. Maybe the officials don't either. The new AD should raise hell about the officiating and Illinois.

Well i knew when they called that first DPI on Collier it was going to be a long night however, I’m a realist as well and understand that officials could call holding on just about every play. As long as the holding has no direct impact on the play, I don’t necessarily have an issue with a no call but in this game, there were NUMEROUS holds committed by UI that had a direct impact on the play. The biggest being the last TD they scored, i saw two defensive players being blatantly held which allowed the UI back to score with the official looking right at them with no call.

You are right about the calls but a coach and team who blatantly taunts and disrespects their opponent is damaging to the sport. Taunting can lead to violence and totally take away from a focus on the game. That coach is creating a negative sportsmanship culture. He should be banned from the sidelines for a penalty period next year.

Carolina fans are turning into perpetual whiners about officiating, and it makes them look like whiney brats. Win the game on the field and quit bitching about the officials. Gamecock fans are turning into Texas or Ohio State fans who always blame officials for every loss, no matter what happens on the field.

One thread and the entire fanbase are whiners now. What an exaggeration.

So you think it's ok for a coach to taunt his opponent in the middle of a game which encourages his players to do the same? Ever see Saban, Kirby Smart or Dean Smith do anything like that? Surprised there wasn't a brawl like the one at the NC State/E Carolina where the official ended up bleeding and 10 players got thrown out. The issue is not about all the calls. SC made a lot of mistakes and for the most part did not look like they were going to win. But things could have gotten much worse after that jerk showed his total lack of respect for our school and our coach.

I've never seen a coach look like an unhinged lunatic like Shane did on the sideline. If standing on the field with your arms outstretched is taunting, someone needs to get thicker skin. It would be easy to say a coach acting like a hysterical woman having a nervous breakdown on the sideline is encouraging his players to lose composure.

Shane looked like Dabo 2.0 trying to be the center of attention.

FIFY. What Bielema did was beyond the pale. You don't go onto the field - to the other sideline - and gesture AT ALL - at the other coach. Unless it's a sign of respect during the game, that is absolutely uncalled for and he should be fined and suspended. Imagine if that was the way the game was played - the coaches taunting each other from the field. It's ridiculous and a sign of how far American culture has degenerated. Sport is no longer gentlemanly competition. If you feel slighted like Bielema admitted, you get in someone's face.

What's next? A live-tweeter from the coach's social media trolling the other team every play?

We have a history of almost always getting screwed by all refs in every game! I hope our new AD goes to the head of officiating or their office and demand an explanation for that plus why fat a$$ was allowed to sub the way he did!!

I don`t blame Shane at all. Blame the perpetrator - Bieleima - not the victim of the taunting. Disgraceful behavior warranted a flag for taunting, yet somehow there was none.

I've never seen that head ref before and I watch a lot of CFB. I don't believe they called a single offensive hold and they couldn't count 12 men breaking the huddle. I think that about answers the question.

Through out all the bowl games, there seems to be an unspoken
vendetta against the SEC, period. I’ve watched all the games where
the SEC was involved and to varying degrees, the same things
have happened! This is the year that the other conferences are
tired of the same old thing.

The SEC will not be represented in the NC picture this year.
