Franklin speaking now. SC airport runways do not have the length to have planes to fly to LA. Team will bus to Harrisburg and fly from there to California. So….. length matters!

SC Airport suffering significant shrinkage!
It's a statement made in jest based off of a common reply by a regular poster here.
UCLA came in Friday to State College on (2) 737's. They flew back on 1 plane out of Harrisburg.
They should just tack another $50 million on the $700 million.... it's not like the BOT cares about spending money.
Good for them. Who the hell wants an airport that big in sc anyway. No one. Well maybe franklin. lol. For one game a year out of 365? That is silly.
$50M?!? The BoT would happily pay more than that if given the chance.

Landing a low on fuel plane is perfectly fine in state college. The limitation is taking off with a fully fueled plane for a long distance (West coast) destination that can't be accommodated by state college airport in its current form.
I thought I read (some time ago) that Paterno discouraged State College from increasing the runway length because he liked that visiting teams had to fly into Harrisburg and then bus down to State College. He said it would ware them out a little before the game making them not as sharp. He chalked it up as part of the home field advantage. I may be wrong but that is what I remember.

Penn State has a 107,000 seat stadium that gets used....8...maybe 9 days out of 365.
True. An option is to have enough fuel to fly to a bigger airport, refuel there and then head to LA (for example, Pittsiburgh). Not sure that would make more sense than driving to Harrisburg. Especially for UCLA after a game and dealing with 322 traffic.
It must be easier to drive and get a long non stop so maybe they can sleep? Maybe a pain for all the guys to get through the airport together in pitt Philly or Chicago not to mention weather or flight delays or mechanical issues on the second leg.
That's feasible. But, the busses that take the team out of State College are stuck in the same traffic and construction as everone else.
If they have a 757 with 25 % fuel, they can fly out of SC to Pittsburgh (for example), land, fill up, and take off again. The max take off weight for a 757 is between 220,000- 273 000 lbs (depending on the confguration and type engine). That would easily get them to LAX. Take off length at max weight is 6000 feet (give or take, and depends on temps). The single runway at SCE is 6701 feet. So, they could get a big plane out of SCE.
The logisitics are interesting.
They get a police escort to get through the worst of the traffic (or, if you're Rutgers, to get you all the way back to NJ).
Yeah, but that still takes 1 1/2 hours or so. Busses can only drive so fast. And it's not like the traffic separates like the parting of the Red Sea. Maryland had to deal with that one year.
Nonetheless, the logisitcs are interesting.
Does the Rutgers bus drive like an a hole, speeding, tailgating, and darting in and out of traffic and cutting people off like other NJ drivers?
The interesting thing with Rutgers is that they bring their own escort, and their officers will turn their lights on in State College and use them all the way back to New Brunswick. It blows the minds of our officers, as they said it's a huge potential liability to be running your lights hundreds of miles from home, should anything ever go wrong, when it's not really an emergency.
One interesting logistical thing...for a few seasons, they tried doing the visiting team's TSA checks right at the stadium. They'd secure the area, have every traveling party member go through TSA and get directly on the bus, then bus them straight onto the runways and walk on the planes. However, it ended up being more trouble than it was worth, and they now just do the TSA stuff right before they get on the plane.
