a loss to a ranked Alabam team carries a greater penalty than a loss to an unranked Vanderbilt team?

Or, a win over 5-7 Citadel moves a team with a much, much weaker SOS up significantly higher in the ratings while a win by another closely rated team with a much, much stronger SOS over 5-7 Wofford barely moves the rating needle.

Exactly. Moral of this story is a weak schedule makes a weak opponent look stronger.

What should be learned is that this is much like Pro Rasslin' - the winners are known before the season starts. There are some contingency plans in case things don't go perfectly, but they have a pool of candidates to pull from. If you aren't on that list, it's really hard to get on it.

The other stuff are intentional distractions to keep outsiders from noticing what the magician's other hand is doing.

Just heard Rece ask the puppet, uh, spokesman Warde Manuel a direct question and his effective answer was, "I'm not answering that but I'll say this instead..."

Ooookaaaay... sounds good to me.

Just revert to the age old advice.
Just win your games, don't leave the game in the hands of the refs and the rest will take care of its self.
Although true, if the concern is an equal playing field, that wont bring it.

Agreed.

Playing 12 Goliaths would understandably yield different results than 12 Pee Wee Hermans. The analogy is like pole vaulting - is it more impressive to try 20' 12 times and clear it 9 of those or set the bar at 10' and clear all of them? All you've proven is that you can clear 10', not that you're good enough to clear 20'. But in the world of Simpleton Sports Thinking, 12 is greater than 9 so they must be better.

I think this is a pretty lazy take. Close games are a thing. As a matter of fact, it’s what makes sports great. If every game was a blowout with no doubt left then there would be no point in watching. To sit there and say that it’s our fault because we let the game against LSU even be close is just ridiculous in my opinion. Every team will have close games. Yes, even champions. Those games shouldn’t be decided by officiating. Period.

I made no mention of any particular opponent, nor suggest any game must be a blowout, or declare fault with any entity.
It appears you have inserted your own projections to validate a non argument.

My mistake. “Don’t leave the game in the hands of the refs” would you care to elaborate on exactly what you meant by that? At least as in how it pertains to our season in particular?

I really don't feel I need to, most have heard this maxim many times before and are clear to its meaning.

So you’re upset that I said it’s a lazy take. And rather than clarifying, since it appears I misinterpreted the message you were trying to convey about our team and season, you would rather continue with laziness.

Your advice is correct as an instruction to a team on how to make the playoff, but so far this year only one team in the country has followed your advice fully. For everybody else (minus the automatic-qualifiers), I'm afraid a deeper level of analysis is required - a level deeper than what the committee has demonstrated so far. Worse, their analysis appears inconsistent week to week.

Doesn’t matter. His name has Harvard in it and he used an age-old adage that requires no thought or explanation, according to him.
