Made a post about this situation on Paul's board a few months back with an update a couple months later...thanks to DS for letting me post it on the Pack to get more eyes on it.

Sept update
He goes to my church....and he needs all the help he can get right now.He has a learning disability...and pretty much no family to lean other than his grandma and she is in bad shape herself.Church is trying to help him as much as we can...he loves State...me and my wife have brought him to a number of games over the years. It's just a very bad situation right now...just an awesome loving type person.

Nov update
They are making one more drive with this before the year is out and hope to meet the goal by March.Planning on getting him a wheelchair and fixing the bathroom to be more easier for someone with health/handicapped issues.

I don't do social media at all...so my reach is very limited...so if folks could share this etc it would be an awesome help to get more eyes on it.My church should have taken care of this but they have dropped the ball in a massive way...we go to a pretty large church in the area but they are under new leadership. They forgot to include his name on the Christmas drive they add number of southern churches share with each other this time of year for situations like this and that is inexcusable to me that they forgot about him.I guess he wasn't part of the right group or family...but I'll stop my rant about that on a message board.

Has anyone reached out to a DME supply place or maybe Methodist rehab to see about a donor chair? I would look for a place with an ATP on staff- this is someone that can truly assess someone for an appropriate chair. Maybe that person wouldn't mind taking a look to see if they have a chair they can donate that could work.

Or maybe he is on Medicaid? Just guessing based on the information. Medicaid will pay for a custom chair. He will need one in the meantime, but if he is going to be using one frequently he truly needs a custom made especially for him. I promise this is very important. To get a custom chair, he needs his neurologist I believe to write a prescription for one and get evaluated for one by an ATP and a PT or OT. It takes a while to get one back depending on how quickly insurance approves and how custom it is.

If this is a possibility, again, you may reach out to whomever the doctor feels he or she will use and just see if they may have a short-term solution. Methodist has a great seating clinic, I use A&A out of Greenville frequently, PerMobil is great, there's another one I just can't think of right now that is also great.

Hey everyone,

I just want to use this post to let people know- if someone needs a wheelchair for more than just transport purposes (using it specifically just for long distances or to get from point A to B efficiently), they PROBABLY need an evaluation for a custom wheelchair. And YES- in this case it sounds like he needs something for the short-term at least and that's awesome you have people willing to donate.

But I want to let y'all know, if they have Medicare or Medicaid, they can get a custom WC paid for. Do NOT allow the insurance to pay for a non-custom one- a bad seating base can do more harm than good and set them up for pressure wounds, fixed postural deficits like scoliosis which can impact pain levels and even breathing, safety, etc. They'd much rather pay for the cheap one than the custom. These insurances will only pay for a new chair every 5ish years. So it's a big deal that you get the right one.

If you are in this market, ALWAYS use someone called an ATP. Unfortunately, many DME places do not have these or say they do but really this person is at their main office and you never see them. If someone other than an ATP does the assessment, they are very limited on the type of chair they can order- for most people needing a custom, the only chairs they can order actually are terrible options (the most basic). But wheelchairs are apparently big business and they feel fine doing this. They are similar to the people that used to go door to door getting everyone an electric scooter. There should always be an ATP and then a PT or OT doing the evaluation together- it's a major red flag if there isn't or if they say they don't need to physically see you for a wheelchair assessment (or don't take you out of your chair to assess your posture and ROM).

I hope this came off right and doesn't sound like bitching, because it's amazing to see those of you that want to help. I'm a PT and kind of passionate about this. I've seen so much harm done from getting a poor fitting chair. Too many companies are unfortunately in it for the money and are NOT doing what is best for the patient, and it's very sad when most people have so many options available to them.

And just for the record- ATP's blow me away with their knowledge and kindness. They see these situations all the time and can help in so many different areas. I have sent contact info for one to the OP and I hope they use him.

I use A&A Mobility out of Greenville, have used Mobility Medical (I think) out of Jackson, Methodist has a seating center... there are more I'm sure. There are only a few ATP's in the state, but they travel a lot. Let me know if I can ever help anyone! I'm sure I could find one to help if you ever need to get a custom WC evaluation.
