Since it has nothing to do with the Next year's line-up thread, I'll stick it here.
First off, the athletic department should have no say in determining what courses should be counted for an academic degree, just as an academic department should have no say in determining the starting lineup.
Second, was Evan Wick not admitted into Penn State or was he not going to be able to graduate in one year or two semesters? I'm betting it was the latter.
Every university has a minimum number of credits that must be completed at that university in order to get a degree from that university. For example, you can't spend four years at MIT and transfer to Stanford and take one three credit GenEd class and expect Stanford to give you a Stanford degree. In order to get a Penn State a baccalaureate degree, a student must complete a minimum of 36 of their last 60 credits at Penn State. (Item #2 under Graduation Requirements) So, even if every single credit from Wisconsin transferred, he would still need to complete 36 credits here at Penn State. Starting athletes rarely take 18 credits during the season, but I suppose he could have spread some of them over an additional semester. Would Penn State have paid for that additional semester?
Third, Evan Wick was enrolled for four years (assuming he did not take classes during his Olympic year) at Wisconsin and did not graduate. Why? Since he was a three time Academic All-Big Ten, I think it is safe to assume that it was because of poor grades. So he either didn't take enough credits in his four years or he changed majors at some point. Possibly a combination of the two.
Fourth, Wick's major at Wisconsin was BS Rehabilitation Psychology. A quick look at Penn State, it looks like BS Rehabilitation and Human Services might be the equivalent. There is one glaring difference between the two. The Wisconsin program requires six credits of supervised field experience in two three credit chunks. Penn State requires a fifteen credit internship taken in one semester with no other classes allowed, typically in a student's final semester. Even if Evan had completed the six credits of field work at Wisconsin, it would not have been able to be counted as one fifteen credit internship at Penn State. Nor should it.
CalPoly is on a four quarter system instead of a three semester system and I have neither the time nor interest in digging into those differences. Wick's major at CalPoly was Interdisciplinary Studies. Those types of degrees are more flexible in when it comes to what courses can count for what. I also remember when I looked at it the other year, that it was a BA degree as opposed to the BS Rehabilitation programs at Wisconsin & Penn State. Perhaps the field work requirements are significantly different or not required. I have no idea what amount of credits that CalPoly requires to be taken at CalPoly to get a CalPoly degree. If Wick still has his California resident status, any coursework not covered by one year of scholarship would be a helluva lot cheaper at CalPoly than out of state at Penn State or Wisconsin for that matter.
Lastly, if Sanderson threatened or was on the verge of quitting over the Wick debacle, he's in the wrong profession. Given the level of success he has had here while being able to navigate numerous transfers, I think that part of the alleged debacle is hyperbolic tripe.

Hopefully, with Kraft & Neeli in place we don't have another "Evan Wick" debacle.
It was only a debacle to those that think an athletic department should be the one to determine what classes should be accepted by an academic department. I would hope that Bendapudi & Kraft are not those people.
Yeah, why would we be so presumptuous as to think a Wiscy grad & Cal Poly transfer shouldn't qualify here.
LOL. Just LOL.
He was NOT a Wisky grad. He was trying to transfer from Wisconsin to Penn State after several years and not all of his coursework at Wisconsin would directly transfer to the academic program at Penn State. It happens all the time with regular students trying to transfer from one university to another at that stage in their career.
That makes it wrong for Wick and for those students.
PSU has 200-, 300-, 400-, and 500-level independent study classes across most if not all majors. Wick should have been able to take those, maybe 1 per semester, to validate his non-transferrable education. Or been allowed to take a grad school-style comprehensive exam.
For the non-Wicks out there, this is a money grab wolf in academic integrity sheep's clothing. Repeated semesters aren't free.
It appears, from first hand knowledge, that PS is one of the most challenging Univ to transfer credits to - even for “regular” students. Seems like PS likes it that way
Darn near lost Cael over Wick. Better not happen again with admissions or all *** will break loose.
