the bandwagon effect

i've often wondered how much the hiring of a new coach had on the effect of a school's income (donations and ticket sales) and the local economy. Back around 2001, when all logical people could see that jackie was done, i'm sure LT was only thinking we couldn't afford to fire him. you would think someone in his position would look at the big picture. how much of a financial impact would there have been if we had hired croom 2 years earlier?...or even a proven coach? it surely would have, at the very least, covered jackie's buyout, and it wouldn't have taken croom as long to pull the team out of the sewer, thereby likely increasing interest income over the last couple years.

what i am getting at is, if you take actual coaching ability out of the equation, and you look at hiring raffo versus hiring cohen, there has to be significant financial implications beyond their salaries. hiring cohen would probably push season ticket sales over 6500. hiring raffo would probably mean less than 5000. cohen would provide a level of excitemnt that we haven't had in a long time, and excitement translates into money spent. you take that a step further and then look at the actual potential for success, it should be pretty clear.

....though I have to admit that I didn't think Jackie was done after 2001. He'd had bad years before and always rebounded. After 2002, definitely, but not 2001. So based on that, I think firing him then would've equaled OM firing Cut when they did. You don't get a proven head coach, and you might get an initial spike in ticket sales, but apathy would set in if you end up with somebody like Orgeron and it ends up costing you in the long run on top of the buyout. In essence, OM had to buy out Cut and Orgeron in a 4 year span.

However, your point is correct. Even though Cohen will be more expensive, we'll make it up in ticket sales.

In 2001 all logical people could see that Jackie was done? Really? He'd had one losing season after the most successful 4-year run we've had since the 1940s. I think most people thought he'd turn it around at the end of 2001. Now a year later, I think most people thought he was probably finished.

I don't think the season ticket theory works too well for our baseball team. Most season tickets are sold to people who have had their chairback seats forever. Those people know that if they ever give those seats up, they're not going to get them back for a long time, if ever. And if you don't have a chairback seat, there's little reason to buy a season ticket unless you're going to go to almost all of the games. You can just as easily buy single-game bleacher tickets for just the games you want to go to.
